Plot twist: Alfred is actually a clone of Richard John "Dick" Grayson--the original Robin, the Boy Wonder from 1940.
Dick inherited all of Bruce Wayne's wealth and used it to commission memory clones of Bruce as well as young and middle-aged versions of himself. The Clone-Dicks' memories were copied from his own mind, while Clone-Bruce's memories were reconstructed from Bruce's archives--hence Batman's two-dimensionality and Robin's relative normalcy.
Dick is now 90 years old, kept healthy and alert by periodic stem-cell injections and organ transplants, using repurposed Clone-Dicks as donors. He directs the Dynamic Duo and a small but ubiquitous army of Alfreds from the Nest, his secret lair beneath the Bat-Cave.
