I liked the Dilbert comic when I was younger even though I've never worked in an office and can't relate to a lot of it, but we still get them in the Toronto Star and boy is there basically no room for innovation on that concept. On the other hand, the Dilbert TV series remains hilarious to me. Much more absurd humour instead of the same old office frustrations. As for the other comics in the Toronto Star, most of them are pretty weak. Pooch Cafe is kinda funny sometimes?

This line gave me more joy than it had any right to.

I'm inadequately prepared for discussion of syndicated comics, apparently. I thought Johnston had handed over the reins (wasn't sure if it was artist or writer or both), but that was my last recollection. I didn't realize it was simply (semi-)reruns and essentially actual reruns.
I actually had a discussion about comic-syndication on FB with an acquaintance and was stumped. I recall that the Toronto Star did a 'try-out' (a couple of weeks each for potentials over the summer) to fill a spot on their Saturday comics page. I could both no longer identify my preference at the time, nor the comic the Star ended up going with. Which, I feel, dates both me and my comics interest considerably. Because I was pretty adamant about my choice at the time, but have nothing but vague recollection of the whole situation now.

On a tangential note, a coworker recently gave me a memory-stick loaded with the Dilbert animated series. As much as I enjoyed the early Dilbert syndicated comic, I do feel that the cartoon TV show is more accessible (despite only two seasons) to the general populous. I liked early Dilbert, but it became a bit too niche, as I recall. The TV series actually remedied that.

Also, the only syndicated comic I've truly enjoyed in the last 10 or so years has been Retail. And I don't think anyone is carrying that syndication at this point? Or at least no one I've read.

I guess you could go with For Better or For Worse. If that's even syndicated in the US. Original or reboot-with-new-author/artist. It should appeal to the bosses, presuming they are proper WASPs.
For Better or For Worse (or Foob to genuine comics enthusiasts) was never rebooted with new author nor artist. After it ended in 2008, Johnston elected to run it again from the beginning with a mix of old and new artwork and changed dialogue. Two years into this however, she stopped and it switched to straight reruns with some tweaked dialogue to remove dated references as well as removing panels featuring corporal punishment of the children.

If you want to step to me about newspaper comics, you best come correct.

As of the most recent Foob strips, Farley is still alive and well.

Cathy ended almost five years ago. It was very emotional for those of us real comic fans. The new woman-centric comic filling the great void left behind by Guisewite's retirement is Donna Lewis' Reply All, which targets Gen X businesswomen in the same way Cathy targeted Boomer Yuppie women.

Working in a cubicle? You oughta get on that Dilbert, son. Now that's a funny comic about office life.

Hey, so I've been a lurker for a while, but I'm now in a graduate school lab, and now that I have an office (shared, but I have my own cubicle...yay!), I'm looking to decorate it with comics. I have a few xkcd and SMBC comics already from clicking the Random button til my fingers bleed, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of a webcomics index that has individual comics cataloged by themes. I can search by keyword on OnNoRobot, but that's only getting exact matches for me. Like the one about the turtle breathing through its cloaca is pretty unfindable unless you know what you're looking for (Cloacamazing!).

Alternatively, if anyone has any recommendations (SMBC or otherwise), I'd be happy to hear them!

In order of specificity: Science, Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, Soil Science, Microbial Ecology (microbial communities), Soil Microbes, Global Warming. Thanks! :)
