Even if there is a gay gene, I don't think there would be much motivation in "correcting it", if homosexuality was wildly accepted. Instead, the motivation would be so people could become more promiscuous than they would be otherwise. That reminds me of the SMBC Theater short, The Wish, where the guy wants to be bisexual. Even if it is genetic, being gay could become a choice. Evolution would just follow the choices.

Besides, our population needs to shrink. There are too many of us on the planet.

My guess is because sexuality isn't a binary and that's likely to complicate what Digs was proposing.

Fun fact: According to Kinsey, 46% of people are at least somewhat attracted to people of both sexes! Image
Well, it IS complicated. Perhaps the same things that would predispose a person to homosexuality would have a lesser effect if all the conditions are not met (such as the right environmental factors). Perhaps choice does play a larger role for a larger number of people than we thought. I'd personally be careful pursuing that line of thought (choice) because of the groups of people who think choice being part of the equation somehow changes something.

I don't know, hopefully this is one of the last things on the list for scientists to research.

Digs wrote:Especially given our huge genome sequencing ability nowadays, there's no reason to think that there's anything like a 'gay gene;' rather, there should instead be numerous hotspots scattered throughout the genome that act like 'risk factors' for homosexuality, just like there are 'risk factors' for schizophrenia, Crohn's disease, and tallness. Your environment will of course have an impact and interact with your specific genotype to produce an emergent sexual orientation. People with more genetic 'risk' for homosexuality should be more predisposed to being homosexual, just like 'risk' for height are predisposed to tallness. All you'd have to do, if this is the case, is gather a bunch (tens of thousands) of DNA samples and look for gene variants and sites in the genome that are found predominantly in either hetero- or homosexuals and, boom: pieces of the 'gay gene.' But, since it's not really a pressing issue, we'd have to wait a few years for the price of sequencing to go down enough to make the research fundable. It'd really be neat to see what genes and regulators are involved, though, to have a mechanistic understanding of how the two different orientations are biologically wired.
Yes, this is a good scenario. Great point.

We are just cool like this and don't need no stinking genes.

I assure you, no further debate will take place from me on the subject of Evo-god.

Thanks. I just have to sit on in case they ask a technical question about the software. Being that these are the lawyers and not their IT specialists, the "technical" questions are pretty dumb.

I am right now sitting on a phone conference with people from three continents that are learning the product I've been working on for two years now. You have no idea how bored I am.

The concept that evolution somehow sees the futures is also a common misconception about the process. What if one person reads the rebuttal and realizes that what they believe is as stupid as it is? Maybe that person's kid won't be quite so dumb.
