Yes, except for the really fat ones.

They go in the zoo with the other elephants.

I'm proud to say I'm a -1, seeing as I am actually a sapient cabbage.

See, I don't like the 0 or 1 approach to humanity. I like the decimal system. I'm a 1 and everyone else is lower than that.

No, it's neither of those things. You're not taking into account that people on the autism spectrum gravitate toward certain careers and hang out in the same circles. I'm an engineer and a musician.
I'd imagine you are wrong. I'd think that the interests would be as varied as the genpop. Might they try to avoid certain types of jobs within said fields? Sure.

Are you really going to tell me that only 1 in 10 people incarcerated are african-american? Even the Bureau of Justice Statistics, when it released a report in 2009, guessed the incarcerated population makeup to be 2 in 5 blacks and 1 in 5 hispanics.

Mmm, I don't know if it's a stereotype. I would be stereotyping if I said that ALL people with ASDs are musicians and engineers, but that's not what I said. I'm just talking about statistical tendencies. I'm sure somebody reading this besides me goes to a top tier engineering school. Are you really going to tell me that only 1 in 88 people on a campus like that is on the autism spectrum? Even Temple Grandin, when she spoke at my school, guessed that about 1 in 10 or 1 in 5 people in the audience could get diagnosed with an ASD if we wanted to.

Here's the deal: I am acquainted with three people who have odd speech rhythms, repeat themselves a lot, have obsessions and compulsions, and seem to have a real hard time understanding what other people are thinking and feeling. It's not just that they behave badly in social situations, it's that they behave badly in social situations and have no idea what they're doing wrong. I could be wrong about these particular people I know - I'm not a psychiatrist - but knowing them and seeing them butt their heads up against the wall and say, "Why can't I understand these things?" makes me think that there are probably a lot of people out there who aren't getting diagnosed when a diagnosis could help them.

But whether or not I really know people with undiagnosed Asperger's wasn't the point of my original post. The point was that it's not fair to assume that people use mental illness as an excuse all the time.

I'm an engineer and close friends with a lot of musicians and artists. Since I deal with other engineers all day, I prefer not to be friends with them. While a number of the people I know in those professions have a variety issues and exhibit socially maladaptive behavior, none of them have an ASD. My anecdotal evidence contradicts your anecdotal evidence. Fortunately for us, that doesn't count for shit.

I'm a musician and I don't know any autistic people irl. Therefore, autistic people are not musicians.

Is that playing some kind of stereotyping card?

Lots of people gravitate to lots of jobs for a variety of reasons. You're forgetting that there is a wide variety of completely irrelevant factors that would influence them just the same as they would influence everybody else. Saying "People with x disorder are more likely to be x profession than people without x disorder" is just silly. Also hypocritical, given that hilarious opening rant of yours about reinforcing perceptions and all that.

In my late teens and early twenties a lot of my friends were goths. Amazingly almost everyone they hung out with had an undiagnosed mood disorder, usually major depressive or course.

According to the NINDS, about 1 in 88 children age 8 will have an autism spectrum disorder, of which Asperger is one of the possible ASDs. There is no data for the incidence in adult populations, but it is probably about the same. So AbdominalSnowman must know a lot of people fairly well to know even several people with Aspergers unless AbdominalSnowman is a prodigy at diagnosing a complex syndrome after only a small amount of interaction with a person.

I've only ever met one person with it. He was very aware of it and made great effort to mitigate any social problems it would cause. He often did this by keeping his mouth shut around strangers or when dealing with large groups. I have though met a number of people who were socially inept and often assholes. The only thing that was wrong with them is that for a variety of reasons they were not well socialized as children.
