Once upon a timne, in the ancient old days of lore, those little extra bits could only be seen if you voted for SMBC on TopWebComics, as an incentive. Nowadays there's no voting, but Zach still had them in his archives and put them up for people to see, and keeps producing new ones too.

Instead of using a vast array of processors that can only be supplied by human manufacturers, these sentient machines decided to take the distributed computing route and have humans handle their computation so as to stay low-key so no computer scientist figures it out.
