Eh... I didn't like the way he worded it either, but I wouldn't say it necessarily means he doesn''t understand the term or that it's flat out wrong. It wasn't optimal though because it forces you to question it enough that it prevents it from being funny.

As a once-active philosopher, this "why" confused me for that reason; the joke didn't seem to make sense. I get it now, it's simply because he doesn't get the term.

Sort of "how do you know what you know, and how do you know that you know it." So the question shouldn't be "why," it should be "how do you know?"
