I love that you've made me your nemesis and see me in every slight hurled against you.

He probably curses your name whenever his toast burns or he runs out of hot water too.

Okay, that was pretty funny. And I'm not surprised in the least by the truth re: math and amphetamines. Even when I took intro calculus there were tons of proofs I had to write that were so easy and intuitive yet took hours to write to make them rigorous enough to submit.

It isn't just mathematicians.

The link above is old news, but I couldn't find the actual story I wanted from Nature from a year or so ago. Nature conducted an informal survey asking researchers if they used prescription drugs for non-prescription purposes. Something like 50% said they used them at least once a year, and IIRC, about 20% said once a month or more. Most respondents who used them said it was typically to stay awake and focused through long or overnight periods of experimental data collection.

No the older one is talking about having a job as a mathematician and the new one is talking about making a discovery as a mathematician.

Cultural anthropology was like that for me, but without the studying. Literally just guessed the answers for every test based on what I thought a hippy would say. Kept walking out with A's, so I kept sticking with what worked. Spent the entire semester stressing over whether or not I should have been paying attention in class and studying or not. Lost a lot of sleep, even by my standards. Probably wasn't the best decision.

Edit:
