as an atheist i will tell you that i absolutely will not start worshiping an invisible space magician just because of 'times of crisis' (not a bad video game title btw). The ancient greeks thought animals could spontaneously generate from non animals because Aristotle witnessed flies being coming out of dung and saw no other explanation for it. people believed it until Pasteur discovered that was not the case. people believed that heavier objects fall faster than lighter ones until Galileo laid the smack down on it (and proved the heliocentric solar system - booyah!). currently people don't have an explanation for how the universe came to be, or how time began so they believe in their invisible space magician myth to make sense of it.

Eventually we will figure out what existed or didn't before the big bang. we will keep finding answers and in the process create even more questions. so this is what i believe. I believe in the search for knowledge. i believe in living life to the fullest because this is the only shot we've got at it. and no matter how many times it lets me down, i believe in humanity.

Science is as fickle under interpretation as anything else. You're saying the opposition to your ideas has so and so imperfections, but yours doesn't. Whatever. People tend to make their decisions first, and come up with the reasons later. So that's bull.

Also, science only explains things up to a certain degree. There is no rationalization for the very first thing, the big bang, aside from the fact it just happened. There was nothing but one little spec containing everything, then it suddenly expanded, the universe formed, and gradually gravity pulled the objects together forming our universe. That really sounds all that different from first there was just god, then the universe was created, then the planets were made.

I believe in Jesus I think he was a carpenter who traveled into Asia a bit and came back spouting Confucius mixed with a bit of softer Judaism and it caught on. He really never refers to himself as gods son literally only metaphorically that something his followers touted after the fact. He had some gret ideas to bad now a days he would be considered a socialist.

It doesnt require great intellect at all just go to any number of websites that have the quotes of Jesus & verses of Jesus that would question his divinity you can then take an actual bible compare the quotations to the corresponding verses. Hardly rocket science. John the baptist tended to be the one who played up the divinity not surprising of someone trying to maintain a hold on his cult & attract new followers.

It doesnt require great intellect at all just go to any number of websites that have the quotes of Jesus & verses of Jesus that would question his divinity you can then take an actual bible compare the quotations to the corresponding verses. Hardly rocket science. John the baptist tended to be the one who played up the divinity not surprising of someone trying to maintain a hold on his cult & attract new followers.

The Bible has been rewritten and translated in many languages over time, I pretty sure the Vatican has some really old ones but nothing that implies 'original' (because it wasn't a book at first if we believe all those "Letters to..." parts). So basically we have nothing, not even a first witness hand of events, just some dudes reinterpretation of what they've read.

I'm not getting into an ideological debate, that's boring and long winded. I'm an agnostic, somethings out there, it's gonna smite the hell out of us, but stuffed if I know what it is. Ta da.

p.s. my parish priest (you heard me I was raised devote catholic, went to church every week and listened to all the sermons then grew my own - more broken - mind)... anyway, my parish priest went to the place Jesus walked on water to recruit the followers,* apparently the waters only about 10 cm's deep where he did this. I always found this enlightening that my priest told us this.

How can you not believe in the Space Magician when it's clear his son was one of the greatest magicians that ever lived?

I'd heard something similar regarding the walking on water miracle, and also saw a documentary which claims it was possible Jesus cheated his own death, by being drugged on the cross (the bit where he is doused with a sponge full of what was claimed to be vinegar in the bible), and regaining consciousness in the cave 3 days later. It was backed by anecdotal evidence that it often took at least a day or two for a crucified person to die, yet Jesus was claimed to be dead in the space of a few hours and sent straight away to be buried. He then fled from the Roman Empire towards Asia, telling followers that he'd return someday, but never got around to it before finally dying. As far-fetched as this idea sounds, it would be awesome if it were true, I'd have far more respect for his him if it was confimred he could pull this off.
