I had some desire to do this when I was a kid. That quickly waned, though. It is interesting how many people think they could, or have friends tell them they could. It really says something about the people who post here (and probably about SMBC fans in general).astasia wrote:Doesn't every kid who thinks they're funny assume they can do stand up?
I think I could. I'm all sorts of hilarious.

However, I was just joking. Like I said, I could never do stand-up. But, I do have a good sense of humor, and I wouldn't mind doing that sort of thing for a living. Making people laugh beats working behind a desk any day.

Maybe. I do like pointing out obvious innuendo with a "If you know what I mean" or something similar. It doesn't translate to text well, though, because it is hard to read it as anything other than that they are stating the obvious.littleninja wrote:I dunno, I think maybe she improved your joke....mountainmage wrote:It's cool. I also like taking innuendo too far, so that the analogy or whathaveyou doesn't work anymore, or the more perverted have to really strain their mind around it. Or sometimes, when there is a building innuendo, I'll purposely step out of it completely, using proper medical terms and suchlike. These things amuse me, especially since I work in a warehouse atmosphere.

As a person currently starting a stand-up career (I have had two gigs and another one coming up. Going well) I would like to say that although it is difficult, there is one area which I think is a little bit easier. You want to find a raport with the audience, so ask someone in the front row what they do for a living. Any joke you make will not have to be as funny as a prepared one because the audience lets you off for it being improvised. Hang on, I will get my graph.

I think even with improv, you have some sort of a background idea of what you are going to do. You have preconceived notions of what you would or would not say. If you don't, you end up shouting the N word into the crowd. The fact it was improvised makes it more offensive, while being planned would have been offensive but seen as pushing the envelope.
I did an improvised project in 7th grade, re-enacting a shakespearean play. We were given three days to script, and instead we wrote guidelines and improvised the entire thing. An asian friend brought in a tape with one of those hip hop beats and free styled his lines. We got a B, because she said it wasn't all that hard to throw all the class clowns into one group and have them improvise.
I was the white pimp, by the way.
