Man, that pageget confused the crap out of me.

Anyway, the reason you're not getting anything solid from Google is because the Greenwich Mercator Association really doesn't like it when people find out about them. I can give you a quick rundown, but be warned that most of this knowledge is second-hand and pretty outdated (I was told these things by someone who was a member of them in the 50's).

The GMA actually has nothing to to with mapping or England. It is an association though, so at least it has that going for it. Formed in the mid-1700's, the GMA was founded on the principle that all men are created pretty much equal. The people behind it believed that while everyone is born with roughly the same equipment, but that there were noticeable differences in aptitudes and mental faculties. Of course, none of this has any bearing on the modern GMA, but it's nice to have perspective on things like that.

Nowadays (at least, as of about 1957) the GMA concerns itself with breeding and supplying pet shops all over the world with the finest selection of Siberian hamsters possible. I'm not entirely certain why they do this, as I had to change tapes in the recorder and the guy I was interviewing refused to stop talking while I swapped tapes or backtrack after a fresh cassette was loaded. My bad, I should have had two recorders ready. Sorry. As to the people involved, they are invariably well-mannered and every single one has a razor-sharp mind as well as some physical deformity.

They don't select for those qualities though, it's just a bizarre coincidence that only the brilliant and misshapen ever choose to apply. Those who undergo corrective surgery in order to fix whatever part of them does not meet with society's standards tend to drop out of the association soon afterwards, although never because they no longer 'fit in' as it were. For instance, the man I was interviewing dropped out after getting surgery to correct a harelip chose to leave because the association was meeting on Wednesday afternoons and his work schedule changed such that he was no longer able to attend.

That's about all I can remember off the top of my head, but I know I have notes buried somewhere in my Dad's attic along with most of my library. I could probably try and find them next time I'm up north at his place, but that might not be for a while. Hope this helped!

:edit:
Just noticed that you were talking about the booster, not the GMA itself. Near as I can tell, they're just doing a fundraiser to get some new equipment for their breeding centers. Not much interesting, if you ask me.
