At least that's the way I see it, a really good boyfriend is someone who will be there for you and support you, and vice versa. You know what sucks? Getting interested in a girl you see on a regular basis. Making a first move and getting rejected has the added pressure of facing awkward encounters every bloody day. Plus, all of her friends are bound to find out within the next day, so pretending nothing happened is also pointless.

You need to play it off casually. Say that you were attracted to her because of her personality and decided to take a shot, but you don't mind being shot down because she's so cool. Then go hit on someone else, get people talking about that. She will feel unimportant, and perhaps want you more. You look like a loser if you act like a loser.
If you're not okay with that, flattery will get you everywhere (except in her pants). Make yourself seem less drastic and desperate, without TRYING to look less drastic and desperate. If she's the kind of person you say hello to when you see her, take her aside, tell her you're not going to kill yourself over this, and then just breeze on like the coolness you tried to pull off but I'm guessing wasn't able to. It will at least become less fun to insult you do damage control.
