I looked it up once but I forget why you pretend-Brits and real-Brits have the holiday.Lethal Interjection wrote:Happy Pugilist Day! For those of you who observe.
Is it to do with the Boxer Rebellion?

I thought it was originally because all the servants and many menial laborers had to work on Christmas, so their holiday was the day after. And now almost all of us are servants and menial laborers. Hurah!

Yeah, that's pretty much it. They would get "Christmas Boxes" with money, leftovers, gifts, etc.

I have no idea why Boxing Day exists, really. It only really became a factor when I started working retail. And as such, I just presumed it was somehow related to the consumerism of Christmas in one way or another.

What difference does visiting before or after Brexit make? You're not a EU citizen anyway, or are you?Liriodendron_fagotti wrote:Dang, I need to visit Britain before Brexit becomes more of a reality.

It'll be easier to go between Ireland and Great Britain, for one. And I want to go before in case things change quite a lot after.Astrogirl wrote:What difference does visiting before or after Brexit make? There's definitely a lot of uncertainty as to how much things will change in the UK once Brexit takes effect, big world events have been triggered from smaller things than this. All the change in the world right now just seems a little overwhelming to take in fully, personally.
As a kid, I just assumed it must have been a day for a big boxing match, but I was not a boxing fan so I never bothered to investigate further. Also it just happened to be one of the few days that exceeded 40 degrees every year, before those days started to get more and more frequent.Lethal Interjection wrote:I have no idea why Boxing Day exists, really. I think the most interesting thing about the Brexit fallout so far (granted I'm not a UK citizen...) is that Apple is already anticipating a long-term disruption and countering with an inflation for any Apple App-store purchases. I've already seen some pretty huge outcry from the app-gaming communities that I frequent.
Don't even get me started, dammit.Liriodendron_fagotti wrote:ALTERNATIVE FACTS

So is everyone still alive? Just checking. Edie, I linked your bird blog as a response a friend's post of a less humorous bird blog. If you suddenly get a few weird, older, goths following you, I'm sorry.
