1) I'm a vegetarian, too! Can we sit together and feel morally superior about our lifestyle choices and look at all those omnivores with disdain.smiley_cow wrote:Yeah you can get bison burgers up here. Personally I'm a vegetarian so I've never tried them personally, but my mom loves them. Best endangered species she's ever eaten, she says.
There's an old MTS commercial (Manitoban telephone company) that has a girl riding a bison in it, and I searched for it for about 20 minutes before deciding it's probably not on the Internet. But know that such a commercial exists and that I really wanted to show it to you.
Course, what else is there for vegetarians to do when we get together? Silly omnivores and their meat.astasia wrote: 1) I'm a vegetarian, too! Can we sit together and feel morally superior about our lifestyle choices and look at all those omnivores with disdain/distaste?
Nope. I know lots of Mennonites though, and even a few Hudderites. They're everywhere, and they speak German which is cool. Why do yo ask?2) You aren't a Mennonite, are you? (Random question, I know.)
Not sure if this is directed at me or not, but I know if I ever used distain I probably meant disdain. I don't think I've ever seen/heard the word distain before.(Is "distain" a made-up word you use? Tell me now or I'll probably keep changing it.)
I asked because my gf grew up in Manitoba, and her family is Mennonite. And, now that I've met a few other people from Manitoba, all of them have had Mennonite origins, so, I started to wonder if any non-Mennonites really populated the area.smiley_cow wrote:Course, what else is there for vegetarians to do when we get together? Ah. Yeah, they're everywhere. They're like locusts. Actually when you get outside the colonies there are very few Mennonites hanging around, though often you'll see them coming in to the city to do some shopping or go to the local fair. Even people who are just descended from Mennonites are few and far between, every once in a while you run into them, but actually I think they fall somewhere around fourth or fifth for largest minorities. First would be Aboriginals, second - Chinese people, third - Latin Americans. There may or may not be more Mennonites here than Koreans.astasia wrote: I asked because my gf grew up in Manitoba, and her family is Mennonite. Astasia spelled it d-i-s-t-a-i-n. That's why I corrected it. It was not directed at you, Cow.smiley_cow wrote:Not sure if this is directed at me or not, but I know if I ever used distain I probably meant disdain. I don't think I've ever seen/heard the word distain before.
How dumb do you think I am?Astasia wrote:Edit: Ahh! Mod edits drive me crazy! Disdain is defined as "to look upon with contempt." It's a real word.
Sorry. I must've not been paying attention. My bad.mountainmage wrote:Astasia spelled it d-i-s-t-a-i-n. That's why I corrected it. Hmm. Well, it's good to know that some of you are sane and non-German or Romanian.smiley_cow wrote:Ah. Yeah, they're everywhere. They're like locusts. Yeah, that's what I figured when Astasia pointed out it was a mod who'd typed that in. Then I felt embarrassed for not noticing it sooner, so I decided to just keep my mouth shut before I said something else stupid.mountainmage wrote: Astasia spelled it d-i-s-t-a-i-n. Actually most of Manitoba and I think Saskatchewan too is pretty homogenous, mostly Icelandic or Ukrainian origin (I myself am about 1/8 Swedish ) but Brandon is a freak city. We've gotten about three or four thousand immigrants from China, Mexico and India over the last 4 years and it`s changed how we look demographically quite a bit. Not to say we were completely white before that, one of my best friends growing up was Ethiopian and our Spanish/French teacher at my high school was Haitian, just that now visible minorities take up a much larger percentage of our population than before.astasia wrote: Hmm. My family is actually part Pennsylvania Deutsch, so, I have nothing to speak of.
I didn't realize, however, that Manitoba had so many immigrants. Toronto, of course, was incredibly diverse, but, I got the impression from people who lived there that the midwestern provinces tended to be more homogenous.
That is terrible phrasing. It just sounds so derogatory. Like "suitable for dogs".Cirtur wrote: "suitable for vegetarians"
