That was poorly phrased. No, I know people who don't understand the difference between a fertilized and an unfertilized egg. They don't see why it's OK to eat an egg that in there mind is one day going to become a chicken, but not a chicken itself. So I explain to them that an egg is like a chicken period and they will lay them whether they're fertilized or not.

As for the euthanasia thing, I'm not entirely sure where I stand. At what point is someone considered worth euthanizing?
Are we talking strictly of vegetables? Personally I understand and can somewhat condone it from the Schaivo* case and similar situations.
But are we talking about mercy killing, too?
But even the Schaivo thing is difficult for me. In about 1999 my uncle was doing construction and fell off the beam, about 1-2 stories, and smacked his head on the concrete. He was in a coma for 3 months. And then just came out of it, which was a huge miracle, even to the doctors. He has brain damage, but mild-ish. He functions well, and is really just a slower version of his old self. He gets frustrated because he can't quite do things as well as he could, but he lives a mostly normal life (he couldn't do construction, or run the farm himself, but his wife does the stuff he can't anymore, and together they run it well). So, at what point does the potential for continued life stop?

*At work we are currently having a contest to see who can work Terry Schaivo into conversation the most in a given day. Mostly in politically incorrect jokes, of course. It is particularly funny because it is so topical!

I would say when someone has a terminal illness with absolutely no hope of recovery and they are pretty much doomed to a slow death anyways. Instead of having to wait out the next few months or however long for all your organs to finally shut down.

For me life should be about quality not quantity. I mean if I'm going to be a vegetable, having machines do all the work for me that's not living. I'm also one of those people that if I have cancer that requires aggressive treatment (ie chemo) I'm refusing that treatment*. Promise me fellow Canadians if that happens you'll smother me with a pillow.

*I have a real problem with modern medicine. I just wanted everyone to know that.

We've been going over this alot in philosophy. I'd hate to let my college degree go even more to waste then it will be!

It depends which school of thought you prescribe to. You really can identify roughly what ethics policy you follow. Wolf's ideaology isn't all that rare, it is shared with alot of people. Utilitarian ethics would take the 80 year old man who can't live without the machine off in order to save a few people that could only survive if they had access to it. I'm being general, but it's not uncommon.
