Everybody Draw Muhammed Day

So in light of recent Southpark related controversy a cartoonist is challenging artists the world over to draw Muhammed and submit their drawings on May 20th. I'm curious to see what happens. Will each artist be singled out and targeted? Will Muslims finally get over it and stop trying to enforce their religious doctrine on non Muslims? Is this inviting a new set of terrorist attacks?

This sounds kind of baiting. But dammit, I'm there!

I can't draw for shit, however I'm in for moral reasons. I've actively stood up for Islamic friends here in the US, I nearly had my face pounded in at an airport when I stepped in when I saw a guy getting harassed for praying, but I refuse to support the radical groups (which I believe we're all doing every last time we give in to ridiculous demands). A suggestion for everyone: it doesn't have to be insulting, the point here is that artists shouldn't be blocked off from an entire subject just because a single group doesn't like it.

FUCK THIS SHIT. Seriously, fuck any of you who do this. A group of idiots from a radical website makes some threats, and now you need to shit on all of us huh? Really? THIS IS NOT FREEDOM OF SPEECH, THIS IS HATE SPEECH. I WILL FUCK YOUR MOTHER'S DEAD CORPSE, SHIT IN YOUR MOUTH, STICK A DONKEY'S DICK RIGHT UP YOUR ASSHOLE, ETC. You are not "expressing" anything other than a desire to without reason attack and irritate 22% of the world. I support south park's episode thing, they didn't even show him. BUT FUCK ANY AND ALL OF YOU WHO TRY IT. No threats or anything, just straight up fuck yourself. I'm not offended by you trying to draw him, I'm offended by WHY.

I am sort of with Ahmet, although his reasoning perplexes me as usual. This is just intentionally antagonistic, and I don't really see the point or what this will do. Naturally I'm not in the least bothered by someone drawing Muhammed and I'd defend anyone who does, but this kind of aggressive behaviour is hardly different than muslims bitching about non-muslims drawing Muhammed. It's just trying to cause trouble and force your beliefs on people.

I'm out. Ahmet's comments aside, there are a lot of peaceful Muslim's out there who see the Prophet Muhammad as too sacred to draw, and their beliefs deserve to be respected.

The problem I have with that is that it seems to be perfectly acceptable to mess with things that other people consider sacred. Jesus is a recurring character on Family Guy and Southpark. The American flag is sacred to many people but we legally protect the right for people to burn it. ect ect

Every time this issue comes up I can't help but notice that Muslims aren't looking to be treated equally, they are looking for special treatment which is not okay. Is this purposefully inflammatory? Sure. The point is that it equalizes Muhammed by bringing him down to the level of other religious figures and freankly that is exactly where he belongs. Maybe the end result is that we stop hearing about it every single time someone draws Muhammed because the threats stop and becomes a non-issue for Muslims which is exactly what I'm looking for.

Like I said, I'm with south park on this one. I don't watch them much because my parents are sensitive about things like people cursing or having sex with the devil, but I am a fan nontheless.

I think I found a little problem with this approach.

There's plenty of Islamic dogma that's actually worth protesting. I can't imagine what we'd stand to gain by beating up on something this inoffensive. Could we maybe do an "Everyone Educate a Woman Day" instead?

So we have to spend an entire day schooling women?

Make it a Thursday and no extra effort required on my part.

Yeah, I'm torn too.

On one hand I don't want people pissing on a religion just for kicks and because "Hey, don't censor me, maaaaaaan!"

On the other hand, I don't see how it is right for a religion to infer itself on my life if I don't believe it.

Were you going to draw Muhammad anyway? If not, they're not really interfering with your life at all.
