So you're saying people with vuvuzelas fundamentally hate sports?

I find this sort of thing to be far more annoying than vuvuzelas, but do you see me ranting and raving about how terrible it is? Nope, because I know that it is terribly silly to get angry about games.
Would you enjoy vuvuzelas being played while you play Monopoly with friends? Or while you listen to your favourite music? Or your favourite movies? Or while you sleep?
Because those are all things I also enjoy, which I wouldn't want sullied by constant noise-making.

I would say vuvuzelas are about as obnoxious as airhorns or cowbells at sporting events. The difference being that they pretty much never stop playing the vuvuzelas (while the other two are primarily only played when something good happens). Which is where my annoyance lies. And in soccer good stuff happens very seldom, so instead they play it when the match gets boring, and then more when something good happens.

The simply fact is that they aren't just playing it during the match. They are using the darned things constantly. Players have said they could not rest properly because of all the noise.

It's a game, so if there are enough people willing to cheer with the darn things I see no problem with it.

These are not games, and do not call for vuvuzela cheering.

Yeah, I can agree that making the racket when games are not going on is poor form.

I'll agree there is a bit of xenophobia to hating the instruments. Different societies have different values and beliefs, and the idea of noise vs sound is incredibly subjective. Some can be soothed by the sounds of birds and insects to fall asleep, while others can't get a wink because of it.

Some would argue their idea of cheering is seen as noise by nearly every other group, that they should be silenced. This is also flawed, as it implied might equals right. However, the idea of being ENTITLED to the right to play the instruments is wrong. It can hurt the business and their revenue, and it is perfectly within the organization's rights to ban the item.

I think the real difficulty here lies not in the vuvuzela cheering but the consistency of it, that it is seemingly unabated by anything. At least that is my problem. Which is why I bring in these other activities. Because if something largely annoying is going on while I am enjoying any of these activities, I get upset. So if this were to go on during every sporting event, I would complain (this is ignoring the fact that I would likely get used to it real quick).

I actually caught a few minutes of a game the other day, which is unusual for me 'cause I don't normally opt to watch football. After a few minutes I finally realised that there was a bit of a buzzing sound in the background. It really wasn't that upsetting to me.

I think you can tune them out when you are watching on TV, but they are apparently louder than an operating chainsaw, so being in the stadium with all of those going off would not be very good for your health I imagine.

Also louder than an operating chainsaw (~100 decibels):
People screaming their support for a sports team (~113 decibels)

I will grant that vuvuzelas typically break the 120 decibel level, but spending any appreciable amount of time exposed to above 85 decibels is liable to cause hearing damage. So unless you ban cheering alongside vuvuzelas, you can't really use the argument that it's for health reasons.

Well cheering isn't constantly throughout the entire game.

It was pretty damn constant at the last baseball game I went to. I'll admit that things may have changed in the six-odd years it's been since then, but I doubt by much.

I'm just glad I brought earplugs.

At hockey games you'll have cheering, but it only really picks up when a goal is scored. At a playoff game you have a pretty constant noise level for the most part, but I dunno. It isn't the same as BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!

That was what I thought! Isn't any stadium guaranteed to be really fucking loud no matter what? I mean, most people will wear earplugs to a concert and they're there for the explicit purpose of listening to music. Truth is, the universe is too fucking loud.
