Really if everybody just stopped pirating then we wouldn't be in this mess.

I'll never stop pirating because if I did I would be so bored

Even reading about legislation to stop piracy is less boring than my life would be without it. I should make a friend.

Fun fact: The people who created all the pirating software like torrents in the first place, such as CNET are the ones funding* SOPA and PIPA. I've heard a lot of people theorizing too that this isn't about the entertainment industry worrying about piracy but worrying about competition they're seeing on the internet for their stuff. The Internet is democratizing entertainment. It's creating a market for more diverse media, but the stuff on top is getting smaller audiences. We've already seen it for music, but we're starting to see it for tv shows and movies too.

At the very least, I think there's merit in the theory. I mean if Disney (another of the big SOPA funders) was really so worried about people watching their stuff for free you'd think they'd at least take all their stuff down on youtube. I'm pretty sure all the animated Disney movies and shows are on Youtube except Pocahontas which was taken down by the company that owns the Japanese rights.

Not that I'm defending piracy, I just think it's an excuse for SOPA, not the actual driving force behind it.

*Or bribing politicians might be a more accurate term

I have a deep love for that picture. It raises so many questions.

Why is the poo still on the balls? Why are the balls so large? What animal would have poo on its balls and yet keep it there? How did this happen? What does this mean?

Another thing I notice about SOPA, Zach's replacement webpage for his comic DOES NOT link to this forum thread. You would think he would give a shit about it, given that it runs on his servers and is an interesting and thoughtful debate on the bill and the causes of the bill.

Just another example of Zach thinking he is a bigshot and thus out of reach to the average person i.e. we.

Suck my balls guys.

That's some sick shit with the pig. I'll never think of even Wilbur the pig fondly anymore.
Also, I agree with the competition thing. Kazaa and limewire and other peer2peer services approached legit companies first. Rather than innovate and adapt to this new, now a popular and successful system, they refused it and then try to shut it down. So fuck them niggas they gay.

For the record, I think piracy is not necessarily a bad thing, and music piracy in particular is definitely a good thing.

I'll start by saying I don't agree with piracy. I don't use illegal programs or products. It's just my personal choice. But I like the changes that are happening in the world with the entertainment revolution. Kickstarter and other similar programs have the potential of making piracy pointless. If we want a good product to be produced by talented people then we pay for that product. The industries pushing for SOPA are simply too lazy and selfish to adapt. Is there a deeper, hidden purpose behind SOPA and PIPA? I honestly don't know. I hope not. I'm opposed to SOPA and PIPA because they encourage stagnation. If America is going to be a capitalist nation then we need to stand firm on one principle. Everyone has the right to succeed by their own merit and everyone has the right to fail by that same merit. To me SOPA and PIPA are just another form of "Too big to fail". Instead of adapting to the new technology and media the larger industries want the government to remove the threat of competition. These are my thoughts and I'll stand by them until someone convinces me I'm mistaken.

I'll say three things:

1. Recording industry profits are way down, performer's profits are way up.
2. Many indie musicians believe that piracy is a good way to spread word-of-mouth.
3. Most people, generally, would spend the same amount of money on their entertainment budget whether or not they pirated.

I wouldn't compare the SOPA/PIPA thing with 'To Big to Fail', they have little if anything in common.
