I know why it is! It comes from teenagers in school, who's main exposure to older women would be the mothers of their classmates. So MILF could be taken to mean hot older woman, just from a fourteen year old boy's perspective.

Thats pretty common with slang. I believe MILF might have originated from American Pie or at least thats what brought it to the mainstream.
