man so I'm subscribed to this thread and never got an email saying people were posting. -___-

Anyways, so I haven't actually forgotten about these. I moved like a year ago. And a couple months after that my Internet went completely on the fritz. We did a major fix about a month ago, and it seems to be a lot better but still randomly just starts cutting out sometimes. So I haven't forgotten about this, and I'm still likely to host another one, hopefully soonish, but I'd still like to take a bit of time and just make sure I can successfully host one before trying to set up a big chat.

In the meantime if someone else wants to try hosting, they're more than welcome to!

Yeah, it wasn't working. It was cutting in and out regularly, sometimes for over 15 minutes at a time. Even when I was in the same room as the router. Not great for hosting a skype chat.

Haha, awesome. Yeah that phrase definitely doesn't translate to German.

Yeah, like, how did that come about? Isn't "made in Germany" supposed to mean it's good?

I never realised it meant from Germany.

I tried looking up the etymology (it goes back at least as far 1902), it's origins are unknown, but one theory is that it comes from people imitating the sound a faulty wire/connection makes rather than related to the German word. Or maybe it's really old anti German propaganda (since it was really popular among soldiers during WWI). Definitely I'd consider something made in Germany to be good quality though.

edit: I did another search, turns out it might come from The Katzenjammer Kids. An old comic that started in the late 1800's where one of the characters named Fritz kept inventing gadgets that didn't quite work or his brother's inventions that stopped working when he touched them. Newspapers that carried the comics liked to say 'on the fritz' in their other stories to advertise the comic.

William Randal Hearst who owned the papers especially liked to use the phrase and was a well known fan of the comic.

Smiley you should read 'Made in America' by Bill Bryson. His linguistic investigation in that book is right up your alley.

At some point in the past made in Germany meant low quality because British engineering was considered best.

I don't know what everyone is doing nowadays but I guess we should do one of these again, like the good ol' days.

aight I'm willing to give this a try. This weekend isn't great for me, but I could do it if a lot of people are free. Otherwise next weekend works really well for me. Either Friday or Saturday around 8pm Eastern? Is anyone available?
