I think it's the same as dogs. Same species, different breeds. Again, this is a fictional game we're talking about.

Science and Pokemon aren't very good friends.
I thought they had to be the same species. Or at least one had to be a ditto. Then again I haven't played since silver, maybe I'm misremembering.

They don't need to be the same breed, but some breeds can't make an egg with certain other breeds. I think Ditto breeds with every pokemon, except legendary pokemon and other Ditto. I'm not sure, it's been a while since I played Gold/Silver.

Pokemon supposedly have "groups" that they can mate with for eggs. It depends largely on their physical biology. You know how a human fetus devolpes in many stages resembling animals that supposedly supercede us on the evolutionary scale? Or how lions and tigers can breed a different animal (liger)? Or how a donkey has an odd number of chromosomes and can't really reproduce but themselves can be born? That's the jist of it.

For example, humanoid pokemon can mate with one another. Plant creatures can mate with one another. Birds can mate with one another. There are a few categories of water types.
You can actually breed pokemon to get a kick ass one. For example, in HG/SS, you can put a female bulbasaur with a male carnivine to get a bulbasaur egg. Not only this, but if carnivine knows an attack called Power Whip (which is like a grass type fire blast) then the bulbasaur egg is born with that ability!

Remember how in the show Brock says he wants to be the world's best pokemon breeder? This wasn't what he meant.

Pretty sure you're thinking of a mule. ;)

Also, thanks for clearing that up for me. Very informative.

There is a difference between mules and donkeys?

Yeah. Mules are produced when a male donkey impregnates a horse. If the horse is the dad and the donkey the mom, you get a Hinny.

on a side note, 1 female komodo dragon can reproduce all by itself. Also the offspring will be all male and genetically different enough to reproduce with their mother.

Ah, but can a female Komodo Dragon reproduce with a Mule?

Somebody get Science on this one.

If I've learned anything from Shrek, the answer is most likely yes.

I got some spam from Joe Clark today.
Unfortunately it was spam, and not an email from a jowly former-PM.

At least you don't know how to cook meth in your basement.

Well, maybe you do, it's pretty easy.

You can't prove it wasn't Joe Clark.

Why universe, why is it necessary for something called the bulbapedia to exist?

For the same reason we have Wookiepedia.
