Dungeons and dragons bastardized the legends of the monsters, just using their names. Ghouls and Genie also come from the arabic, as far as I can tell.
Still, I didn't know they had ACTUALLY been put as the opposite of one another. Has the idea been protected? If I tried something like that storywise, would that be stealing their idea?

Yes, the concept of them paired as Dragons is a Dungeons and Dragons thing. I don't think it's protected if you're using it as a Sea Serpent (Tiamat) and Giant Fish (Bahamut), though.

Well, I have different ideas that are floating around in my head. I might use tiamat and bahamut as sea creatures, or use them as opposite dragons. To be honest, I'm still working out the creature aspect. It needs to be more than "Suddenly, hella monsters everywhere".
At one point I attempted writing my story, but I realized that many details might need to be changed, progression might be lacking, etc.

You could leave Tiamat as a sea serpent, and change Bahamut to Behemoth (who was said to inhabit swampy areas) and have them in conflict around deltas.

But if you're going for the old legends you're kinda stuck with sea serpent and giant fish.

They are only guidelines for inspiration. When I find a way to explain it without it sounding like utter crap, I will indulge you all.
As for now, I'll leave this as a teaser.

This was made approximately 2 years ago, before my drawing was capable of doing something like this. Blatant theft, and ridiculous looking without context.
