Happiness

Post by smiley_cow »

I got some bad news today from the doctor. 'This is going to be a problem for you for the rest of your life' type news, and so I've decided that instead of wallowing in self pity, I'd start a thread designed to remind us of the good things that still exist in the world. This is a thread for talking about the things that we love, it can be big or it can be small, and can be about anything so long as it makes us happy. And before you go and tell me that this is the stupid idea that it probably is, I'd like to remind you that I'm feeling really down right now and would really appreciate it if you'd humour me.

Anyways, I'll start. I really like the way the air smells in the summer.

I love the rain. I wish I could be soaked in it every day. I spend more than half an hour in the shower for the same reason.

Most people hate the cold, rainy weather outside right now, but I really like it. It reminds me of when we were little and we first came here, when my dad was unable to get a job, we had very little money and rented out a small apartment block in the inner-city suburbs with barely any furniture and no heating, living off dad's social welfare payments whilst he went back to university to get his Master's degree because no-one would take him otherwise, and how far we've come from this difficult beginnings. It's this little train of thought that reminds me how fortunate I am, and that my own family is testament to the fact that even if you can't buy happiness, you can earn it.

Since when is chemistry not a science?

I've had a few friends who've gotten news like that recently.
We've really learned to have some pretty awesome times because of it, though. Livin' it up, so to speak.
Often just sitting around pissing ourselves laughing. Good times.
So, yeah, there is always still happiness!

Those moments in your life, that little blink in your consciousness, when you take a break from the routine and step outside, practically eating the fresh air and drinking the sun, and you realize, just for a moment, that you could drop everything and do absolutely anything you wanted if you really tried. I love those moments.

I also love chocolate covered raisins YUM! and when you look out at some rolling uninterrupted plains or some massive forest from atop the perfect vantage point and it's so big and vast and untainted by the familiarity of steel and brick and concrete and mortar and you feel like your eyes are going to explode because it's just too big too look at and your eyes just can't eat it all. I love that.

I also love skin. A warm hand in mine. Rubbing someones back or belly. Playing footsie. Hugs! I love giving great big hugs and popping backs.

You should take up running. It is my favourite part of the day and I run and run and don't think about my problems.

I really like doing push-ups. Something about hitting the floor and going "HAH! I can lift up my body a bunch of times!" Then being too weak to do anything so I just lie down and whine for the next half-hour.

When I have free time and no one expects me to be anywhere, I almost always go walking, for however much time I have, no matter what the weather. Plenty of times I've lost feeling in my arms and legs, or I've gotten so dehydrated as to be delirious. I always go walking when it rains.

Today I walked up to a ledge that was about as high as I can comfortably reach with my arms above my head. Anyway, I totally just jumped and scrambled up.

Whilst holding two cans of diet coke IS THIS AN ADDICTION

SERIOUSLY THOUGH

Sitting down and having a good long read. Especially if it's raining outside.
Doin' podcasts before they were cool.
