The music I'm making

Thought I might share a recording of one of the pieces I'm working on. The recording isn't of me, but I'm taking a lesson with the performer in a few weeks on it.

It's minimalist and pretty damn difficult (but fun). As one of my friends that's also playing it so poetically put it, "It's bullshit hard".

"Minimalist", so yeah. I suppose it can take some getting used to.

I actually said it was interesting because I liked it, but if you say so.

I love minimalist stuff, so I thought I might be biased. It's really rewarding to play.

Man, that perpetuum mobile section around four minutes in sounds designed to kill you. Also it made me appreciate the possibility of jazz bassoon, although it's understandable that saxophone is generally used instead what with the similar timbre and being way easier to play apparently.

Jazz bassoon, you say? And yes, I have to circular breathe for quite a while. I played alto+bari sax in high school and middle school in jazz band; yeah, it's loads easier.

I listened to this again earlier and it just cemented that the composer is a fucking asshole. It's good, but I would not want to be the one playing it.

It's not actually that bad - I could play it myself decently in high school.

Ray Pizzi is crazy, look up 'Ode to a Toad'.

You can find satirical reports of various "musician maladies" on the internet, but bassoon really does have one.

Because our right thumb has as many as 11 keys that it has to leap between*, while the right thumb only has 4 (sometimes 5), our left hand muscles, especially around the thumb, get significantly larger.

*Here's a picture:

I really noticed it because this piece** requires a lot of leaping back and forth between all these keys.

**Which I can play really well now.

I recommend a hang hand exerciser thing for your less muscular hand, or take up masturbation.
