Bolt
staring John Trevolta, and Billy Ray Cyris' daughter
Three Stars - It was a decent watch, amusing in places and light hearted. But it's hard not to compare it to Toy Story and once you throw in a pixar comparison things go down hill for the unfortunate movie you're watching. It lingered a little too long on the premiss and lost possible story line time by doing it. Could have been much better, but still enjoyable and fun.

Righteous Kill
staring Al Pachino and Robert de Niro
Three and a Half Stars - A good movie. It's got two excellent actors and although that doesn't always make a good movie in this case it's made a pretty decent one. The movie itself doesn't pack any serious surprises, but it is true to its genre and does keep you questioning for a long time. The acting is excellent and the script is tight and smooth.

Soul Men
staring Samuel L. Jackson and Berine Mac
One and a Half Stars - I laughed once or twice and then sort of stared at the movie for the rest of the time wondering why I was bothering. I would compare it to the second Blues Brothers movie when it's trying to be the first one. Two washed up soul singers traveling to a concert that might make their come back. If you like to hear Samuel L. Jacksons tagline repeated by himself and Berine Mac about five hundred times (in lieu of a script) then this is the movie for you.

Why yes, yes I will continue to post my poorly constructed reviews here. I'm just that nice.

Channeling Margaret and David there a bit Kimra, what with all star giving and everything. Or maybe that's just what it reminds me of...

I'm bored, I like to review things. I also watch Margaret and David a lot, because I like their reviews, not because we agree, but because I know what their tastes are and I can safely judge my own opinions based on theirs.

Are Margaret and Dave two people that you know in the village we call Australia?

No. There is no-one by those names here.

Saw District 9. Good stuff. I liked the commentary of it all, and it was generally entertaining. Gruesome at points? Sure. But good.
My only real disappointment was that they started it documentary style, and kind of ended it documentary style, but a good portion of it then just followed the main character, particularly in points where camera crews wouldn't be following him. So that irked me some.*

*In the same way Vantage Point did, only that wasn't good regardless. Vantage Point was really interesting in its premise, but then halfway through it gave up on it, which was sorely disappointing.

I also enjoyed District 9, but I think the trade-off for losing documentary style midway was worth it. It told a lot more of the story in ways I don't think would have been as effective were there a camera crew still hanging around.

Oh, I agree. If it was strictly documentary it wouldn't have been as entertaining (or at least accessible, as it might've been more vague like a Blair Witch or sommat). But I still felt a better transition was needed, though I recognize it would've been harder to do well or would've been kind of abrupt or choppy. It was just that they were telling his story from this removed perspective of documentary and collected interviews, and suddenly there is this first person knowledge of his experiences. Just threw me a bit.

I'd like a sequel, but I'll understand if there isn't.

I'm not sure if I want a sequel or not. Certainly the story has room to expand and to be fleshed out a bit, but at the same time I think it stands really well on its own. Also I kind of like that they didn't bother really explaining things, or even letting you know anything from the Prawns point of view, such as what they called themselves or where exactly they came from. Just theories humans had come up with.

Prawn is a derogatory term. One of my favourite parts was where we learned that they had all been given names. The main alien is called Christopher Jones? Johnson? It's fun to watch.

Go see this.

Man, now I'm just going to assume his name was Carl Johnson and that District 9 was a GTA: San Andreas fanfic that got way out of control.

How ignorant you are. They have the power to make or break any film in Australia. Many have tried to break their stranglehold over the Australian box office. Tried, and failed.

I like that they can just say "We don't like your channel anymore, we're moving." and it works, everyone just ups and follows them.

I used to work for Syd.Uni. at this little subsection that ran weekend courses on random things like how to use a computer, appreciating movies, languages, university preparation courses and other stuff. David was a teacher there, (clearly running the movie appreciation courses) and he had a fan base who stalked him obsessively. It was kind of scary.
