The Last Airbender I want to see, though I probably will be disappointed by it. I never bothered to lookup the rest of the seasons after it stopped airing over here, and I'd like to revisit what has been my favourite kid's show in a long while.
Until recently I thought these were the same movie. I thought The Last Airbender was a subtitle to Avatar. Hooray for knowing nothing about anime.

No, I thought the same thing too. Then I saw the trailer to Avatar and my excitement led to utter confusion. I don't think Avatar: The Last Airbender counts as anime, since it was produced by Nickelodeon, though it had some heavy anime influnces in it.

You've now confused me even more.

So there is a movie called Avatar, directed by James Cameron, that has nothing to do with Avatar the pseudo-anime*? And there is a movie called The Last Airbender which is roughly based on said TV program?

Wow. I'd love to know the story behind that bit of genius. Did Fox just steal the title Avatar before Paramount began production? Just to screw with the heads of those interested in the show? Either way it seems like a pretty poor idea.

I knew it was from Nickolodeon, I just found it easier to lump it in the genre.

Yeah, my guess is James Cameron decided to be a jerk, I'd hear a fair bit about plans to make the movie for the TV show long before I heard anything about his film, but I couldn't be sure.

Well yeah, James Cameron's Avatar seems like it could be disappointing despite (or because of) the hype, but I'm hoping it will be as good as promised. I don't think he stole the title 'Avatar' from The Last Airbender, seeing as he's apparently had the movie in mind for about ten years.
Plus I'm not sure why they called the cartoon Avatar, considering the original definition of the word. Granted, I've only seen parts of the first season...

Wait, so there is an Avatar: The Last Airbender film TOO? Not just this Avatar standalone? I am confused.

I will explain it in terms you may find familiar.

Imagine if you will that Avatar is Simon Cowell on the set of American Idol. He has been alive a long time and judges contests which are not entertaining or enlightening for people who enjoy the privilege of a good education/upbringing.

And then we have The Last Airbender, who here is represented by Ryan Seacrest, shorter because it has been in production for a shorter amount of time. Now Ryan Seacrest was originally going to be called Simon Cowell, however due to copyright laws he could not be because Simon Cowell was already in production.

I hope you understand now, because I am about to anounce to the world something I found amusing about avatar the tv series. In Britain a gay man is called a bender. However, in the avatar universe, a bender is one who controls an element using the mind and martial arts. There is a not insubstantial amount of joy that comes from knowing this and watching that show, since people boast how good at bending they are and what a proficient bender one is.

You must find Futurama worth a chuckle or two, then.

It appears that BBCode dislikes accents in links.

Oh, I know. My mother saw me watch the beginning of the show, and asked me if the main character was a ghost, because that's what the word means in our Sanskrit-based language. I suppose it makes some sense to call it that, Ang is called the Avatar but is technically the powerful spirit that resides in him, and passes on from one warrior to another when the original warrior dies. Also the whole shiz about Ang being most vulnerable in his angry god-like phase is explained because if he dies then, the avatar which exposes itself in full glory is also killed and can never come back.

Rachel Getting Married
Four and Half Stars
staring Anne Hathaway
Depicts two things, the first is a very culturally random wedding and the second is a girl who had just left rehab and how she interacts with her family. It is excellent at emphasizing the feeling of isolation and insecurity that a person can unjustifiably feel, and the dynamics of human interaction, misunderstanding and guilt.
This movie made me cry. A lot. But I think it was beautiful in what it did and how it was done.

Also she should have won the oscar for it, and I'm glad to see she did win many other (possibly less tacky and therefore more meaningful awards)

Been meaning to get on that one. I like the premise and it seems very good.

It's not every day you watch a movie and afterwards think, "That was the strangest film I've ever seen." But such a thing happened to me today with Guy Maddins' Cowards Bend the Knee. It was a black and white silent film, made in 2003. And if you like a lot of nudity, coupled with a really strange plot, then this is the film for you.

The plot is a little tricky to explain without giving away spoilers, but it was inspired by when Guy Maddin used to spend a lot of time hanging around Canadia's National Hockey team when they were based out of Winnipeg (the actual film has very little do with this, it's all murder, and intrigue!). And at one point he kills Morris Mott, who actually taught me Canadian History my second year of university (he used to be a professional hockey player, and played on the National Team, the NHL and the WHA) so that is very cool to me. I'm going to have to track him down at some point this year and ask him if he's aware of this.
