I find it is about 85% stereotype.
The other 5% is simply the fact that most Canadians don't hear it when it is said because it is somewhat normal.
The final 10% is more of a regional difference. I find that northern Ontarians say it more often than any of the places I've lived.
Either way, mostly it is a large exaggeration.

Oh my imaginary religious head figure of your choice. If you were to do that you'd be my newest bestest forum friend. My lady friend would hate you at firest but as soon as I show her the Dragon Warriors I'll lose access to my computer

I dunno Lethal I say eh a lot. Not every sentence mind you but a fair bit. I think you'll find as a Canadian you've grown use to hearing it. Now I agree we don't say it as often as people think we do, but we do say it.
Example: A group of us (all Canadian from the Golden Horseshoe area) went to Jamaica. At one of the bars we were just sitting there chatting when the bartender said "You guys are Canadian right?" Now none of us mentioned Canadia, or had any flags, wearing any toques etc. We asked how he knew and he said we were saying eh a lot. We didn't even realize we were saying it. After making a mental note to listen for it we did say it a lot.
Oh but hell ya. Northern Ontario? Forget about it. Also I think Americans think we talk like Newfies. I've never said "aboot" or "hoser"
