You only need to copy it if it needs to be patched, I think. And it usually does, unfortunately.

Someone asked a question about PS3 backwards compatibility! I read up on this for one of my bosses one day (I don't know why) so I can explain it okay.

First off, the PS3 will not run PSX games. No chance.
As for the PS2. This depends on the model. Older models were completely backwards compatible, but one day Sony thought that the worst thing that could happen is people trying to play the games that they own and decided to strip all of the old PS2 hardware from the PS3. Instead they used an emulator, which (surprise!) is not reliable at all and will not play a lot of games. Finally, they decided to remove the emulator, for god knows what reason.
The end result is that you cannot buy a PS3 that is backwards compatible. They don't make them any more and they don't own any more. You'd have to buy one used and get them to tell you the model number. You can check this chart but if you bought it October 2007 or later it is probably not compatible.
