The Fall

Post by davoid »

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fall_(2008_film)

This is the most visually beautiful movie I've ever seen, hands down. Plus, the general style of the whole thing gets an A+ in my book. The plot is pretty good too - very compelling, but nothing world-changing after you've seen it. One of the coolest things is that it features acting by a 9 year old girl that is far and away better than any other child actor I've ever seen.

This is the only movie I've ever seen that makes me want to cry when I watch it.

Anyone else familiar with this film? If not, I'd really recommend it over pretty much any other film.

P.S. - I also just saw "Requim for a Dream." It was cool, and I really dug the parallel aspects of the characters' different stories. The more I look back on that film, the more I realize how similar their motivations, aspirations, and fates really were, and I think that's really cool.

On an unrelated note, I'd like to thank Ed for his ceaseless efforts to keep me current on this forum. I'd also like to sincerely apologize for the terribly incoherent email that I tried to send him in my nightly 3:00 AM delirium. I need to make myself a note from now on not to engage humans after midnight.

I think I remember seeing the trailer last year, it looked pretty interesting.

A great film, for sure. I heard about it a long time ago, and it caught my attention because Fincher and Jonze had production credits. And it just seemed really imaginative and right up my alley. I felt like I waited for it for a very very long time. But then one day it snuck up on me, and apparently it had been on DVD for a little while. So I grabbed it up (a blind buy) for really cheap in the previously viewed bin at Blockbuster*. I wasn't disappointed.
My only qualm is that it is a tad slow at points. But it is a brilliant premise, a wonderful story, and a gorgeous looking film. And the acting is spot on. Lee Pace is one of the most talented actors I've seen. I saw him in Wonderfalls prior to the movie (though didn't know the name so it was a surprise when I recognized him) and have seen the first season of Pushing Daisies since. He's just so frigging good.
Anyways, I really loved the film and would recommend it to anyone who prefers unique films. It won't appeal to many people, but if you really appreciate cinema, this movie is marvelous.

*They actually had a buy 2 get 1 free. I also blind-bought In Bruges, which is one of the best movies I've seen in the last 5 years. Then I had to find another one. So I got Cassandra's Dream (Ewan Mcgregor, Colin Farrel, directed by Woody Allen) on recommendation of an employee. Which was released two weeks before In Bruges, both star Colin Farrell as a first time hitman who finds it very difficult to deal with. In Bruges far outshone Cassandra's Dream. Apparently virtual unknown McDonagh got Farrell's best acting to date, and Allen managed a mediocre performance out of him. I ended up selling Cassandra's Dream. It wasn't awful, but I knew I'd never watch it again.

Pretty much everyone and their mother has been recommending "In Bruges" to me since it came out. I'm definitely going to have to try and find a copy.

Man I am pretty sure Ceaseless effort is not shooting off one email and being surprised when you respond with a coherent and lengthy email.

But yeah, I really need to watch The Fall if it's got Fincher and Jonze involved. And In Bruges, if it's about a fledgling hitman.

Involved isn't really correct. They were to The Fall as Tarantino was to Hero. Basically fathering it into distribution by adding their names and clout to it. Tarsem, the director, funded and did everything himself, to keep his vision alive and not have it be bastardized by the studios.

I was just looking him up on wikipedia, and apparently he did a movie called "Soldier's Girl" in which he plays "a showgirl at a transgender revue in Nashville, Tennessee."
I guess it got nominated for, and won, a bunch of awards. So, I might have to check that out as well when I go and rent "In Bruges."

I checked out the same thing, and was similarly intrigued by that movie and would love to see him in the role. I also intend on looking out for it, though it strikes me as a movie that few rental stores (or even retailers) would carry.

Yeah, considering it was apparently made as a for-television film, it might be tough to track down any kind of hard copy of it.

By the way, Ed, I just noticed your santafied gremlin icon. I laughed for a good minute or so. Childishly. Girlishly. Thank you for that.

So, I checked out The Cell this weekend. You know that terrible movie with Jennifer Lopez? Well, I'd been wanting to see it for some time, partially because it looked strangely surreal, and had Vincent D'Onofrio in it. Well, it was terrible. But part-way through the film I thought the movie reminded me vaguely of The Fall. So I was just reviewing the film on Flickster, and it turns out it is the same director! I love it when I notice stuff like that. It also explains why he wanted to fund his second film himself.

The Cell was both awful and amazing. Vincent D'Onofrio was amazing in it and it was very visually appealing because that's just how Tarsem fuckin rolls. I have The Fall on blu-ray. It's one of my all-time favorite movies. I actually read every post in this thread before replying. I feel pretty good.
