Ash and Bloom - Endless Pursuit of Cool.

I went to gradeschool, highschool, and university with James (on the right). And university with Matt (left). Where they met, naturally. They've been getting some pretty decent press in Canadia lately. Some CBC radioplay, opening for Christopher Cross at the CNE this year, and now playing at the Orange Lounge in Toronto (reasonably prestigious in and of itself). Happy for them. I enjoy their stuff, though it doesn't quite fall within my 'wow, this is AWESOME' niche genre.

Some neato minimal music. I just recently discovered the composer, Jeroen van Veen, and I'm enjoying his stuff. It's not wrist-slitting music like Philip Glass or super frenetic like Steve Reich or John Adams. This is one of his longer pieces, but might be my favourite (there are a couple spots that drag on a little).

Tanya Tagaq - Ancestors

Guys! Tanya Tagaq won the Polaris Prize! And she is super good and you should listen to her! (note: this isn't from the album that won, that's Animism and you can stream it here)

Hozier- Work Song

Hozier's first album is pretty much released (Europe and North America, at least).

I know Ed has a distaste for Hozier thanks to an unreasonably aggressive YouTube ad campaign, but I link nonetheless.

This actually represents the start to a fantastic music month for me. 3 albums are released in the next month (Hozier, Damien Rice, and Ben Howard) and I am attending 3 concerts in the same time span (Damien Rice, Hozier, Nathaniel Rateliff). Which is not to mention that several of other notable (in my mind, anyways) musicians will likely be releasing new albums in the not-too-distant future.

One thing I love about Hozier is his repeated use of the 'small death' euphemism. Which seems to be too obscure for even my more intelligent friends. Which delights me more than I would care to admit to most. I also really enjoy his music, to be fair.
