RAAAAAAAH. I have played this game for probably over 12 hours of the last two days. Yeah, actually, that's a conservative estimate. I first read about it at http://teamfortress.com/ and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. The TF2 team decided to really plug it for some reason, and I'm glad they did, because it really is AMAZING. Seriously, though, I close my eyes and I can still see the game playing.

There's a free "classic" mode that you can play to try out the bare-bone basics of the game, and the full game is currently about $12 (but is apparently going to double in price soonish, as the game enters true "beta" from it's current "late-alpha" stage.)

The full game is basically this: you are a cube-man, dropped onto the shores of a massive island, entirely composed of cubes about your size. On the island are a variety of cube-beasts, and every night a horde of cube-monsters come out to hunt. Your task is to survive, and to tame the wilderness. Any cube on the map (i.e. any PART of the map) can be picked up and put into your inventory. Once there, you can replace those cubes somewhere else on the map, or use them to craft a huge variety of tools - including axes, picks, swords, armor, and even furnaces, mine tracks, and carts. Since everything is movable cubes, you can dig deep into the earth, and build huge fortresses and complexes out of the materials you gather. Crafting seemed a bit sticky and awkward to me at first, but it's already become intuitive.

I'm quickly taming the wilderness on my own island. I've carved about three fortresses into the nearby mountains, and built a few more a little offshore. Countless mines dot the surrounding area, but I only actually do upkeep on the ones that lead into really cool caves I've found. Underground waterfalls, magma bubbling up, gold ore in the walls - the whole shebang.

Anyway, this game REALLY scratches my Garry's Mod "itch," if you know what I mean. Having an endless supply of forests to clear-cut or burn down, animals to hunt, sandbars to terraform, plains to mine, and mountains to blast away with TNT is just FUN.

I played the free one and even that was fun because you just get to dig through the earth and stuff.

Hey, it's like Dwarf Fortress, only with graphics!
Police said they spent some time working out if they could charge the man with being armed with a weapon, as technically he was armed with part of a fish.

Oh My God, I love this. Seriously this is like the definition of being an engineer! I am currently trying to drown an underground nest of zombie/spiders. If only I had dynamite. I can't wait for official version. And obviously I've already bought the game because it costs less now and I can't wait.

I was really into the free one for a while but after a while I just got bored with nothing to do. And I ain't gonna pay money. Still pretty cool, though. Could use some tuning-up, definitely. The full version sounds more fun.

Yeah, I've become pretty efficient at collecting gunpowder from creepers every night. I actually have this massive, artificial cavern going pretty deep into the earth which is 100% dug out with TNT.

My new project is trying to mine some obsidian. Apparently, it doesn't occur naturally, and can only be created by pouring a bucket of water onto a still pool of lava. Then, the obsidian can only be mined with a diamond pickaxe. So, yeah. Rediculous tasks ahoy!

You can mine that stuff?!?! :[]

Plus right now i'm tired of creepers crawling behind me in the morning and killing me in one-shot so I just have the difficulty set to peaceful until I can amass enough resources to completely rule all of minecraft. Apparently the map is "8 times the surface area of the earth" says wikipedia.

Well, be careful. I think you're talking about bedrock. You can't mine bedrock under any circumstances. Obsidian is something different, and apparently if you haven't created any yet, you won't see any on your island.

Whaaa? I feel like that might be a bit of the bs wikipedia comes up with now and again, since I feel like I've stood on a really tall mountain on my island before, and been able to see most of the island by spinning around in place.

EDIT: "Alpha allows for an infinite horizontal playing surface, though limits exist on vertical movement both up and down. The infinite surface is created as the game world is generated procedurally as the player explores it, with the full size possible stretching out to be nearly 8 times the surface area of the earth before running into technical limits."

Okay, I actually might believe that.

Also, Protip: If you're suddenly getting mauled in the forest at night and don't want to die, you can pause the game, set the difficulty level to "peaceful" and unpause. The monsters will all instantly despawn, and your health will regenerate to full. Then you can set the difficulty back to its original setting and continue on your way.

I am a cheater at heart. :D

I've made obsidian before, you just mix lava in water. Plus I don't see the point in switching between peaceful and normal all the time. If I go peaceful it's because I want to farm (I've got at least 200 full grown cactuses, they grow too fast) and if I want normal it's to go on a killing spree to get revenge on all those creepers/skeletons that infiltrate my base!

No, no, no, you're looking at this the wrong way, with this you could make a zombie catcher and then let them die in the morning.

Minecraft has gotten too popular and is threatening the website it is on.

As purchasing an account is no longer logistically possible, the creator has announced a free-to-play weekend.
