The verse on it being the absence of God is a common mistranslation. Here's an example of an incorrect translation that acknowledges that they may be wrong:Lethal Interjection wrote:But if hell is the absence of God, then that includes the goodness and blessings provided.
And since sin is pretty much just perversions of the goodness, then you wouldn't be able to really fetishize anything.

It is more likely that the punishment actually comes from the power of God. How does it make sense that it references the power of His might otherwise? People focus too much on the fact that God is loving while ignoring the righteous judge aspect too much. He is more than any one thing.
