[2012-Jan-12] Annoying Ads
I was reading this while in a meeting and was doing everything I could to not break out laughing out loud!

Why didn't they just stop watching TV by the time everything became ads?
Also, what about Posters and Billboards? And Door to Door Salesmen? And those people who dress up in costumes and dance around with large pointy arrows that lead you to sales?

It's like that Orson Scott Card story where it's illegal not to have a television running at all times. Lonely people would get sad otherwise.cwjakesteel wrote:Why didn't they just stop watching TV by the time everything became ads?

I'll admit this is the first one in a while that's made me laugh. And usually the million-panel ones don't.

No no no. He's definitely talking about Planet of the Apes, by Orson Scott Card. The twist was that it was never a game, he was just watching a movie of a previously committed atrocity, but they then convinced Ender and the rest of the world that he was the one responsible for it. Don't you read?

Basically Orson Scott Card is terrible and anyone who likes him should be ashamed.

I've only read a collection of short stories by him, including the original short story version of Ender's Game. Didn't find them to be too offensive or particularly memorable, except for the Ender's Game one because of the gravity of the final twist that caught me completely by surprise. Wouldn't have picked he could be like that from what I read.

Card is an unfortunately bad person but a lot of his stories are good. The one I was referring to is "But We Try Not to Act Like It" from Maps in a Mirror.
