Jokes aren't funny if they're explained. It's simple comedic formula, subvert expectations and require thought to get the joke. Most of the time when zach adds more panels he ends up just straight up explaining the joke.

Also, according to Acts, Judas didn't commit suicide; he fell headfirst in a field and his body fucking exploded. Both versions of his death are canonical, which is a big problem for scholars who maintain that everything in the Bible is the literal truth. There are other accounts of his death (including one that states that Judas was crucified) but only two of them are in the Bible.

Have to poke my head in here to note, with some amusement, that this actually isn't that big a stretch; there *is* an apocryphal Gospel in which the source of Judas' grudge is the fact that the ointment Mary Magdalen used to wash the feet of Jesus cost three hundred pieces of silver, and as his chamberlain he was due ten percent. (It's also stated that this is the jar that once held the foreskin of the infant Jesus, so a world of ew.) This is why the apocryphal Gospels are full of awesome.

The apocryphal gospels are fun, eh? My favourites are infancy gospels because they're just Jesus abusing his power and getting into all sorts of trouble. Like the one where he used the rainbow as a slide, and then his friends tried but because they weren't divine they went right through it and died. And Mary lectured him so he brought everyone back to life and apologized.
