I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be an insult; when they do guest comic weeks they do each others' comics. xkcd has been pretty influential as far as proving that there is a market for comedy that touches on areas of physics, philosophy, etc, that the average person might not be familiar with. He's paying homage to another great illustrator. =P

If you are still using a CRT. There is almost no power consumption difference for LCDs between displaying white or black. Depending on the monitor and settings, either one could be slightly more efficient.
