Burning ball
MIght be a good metaphor, but physically the ball should do most of its burning on the way up.

If one could throw the ball hard enough to make it to the upper atmosphere (if it were impervious-ball), it would disintegrate within the first thousand feet flying upwards, long before it got that to that elevation.
