It's been a running joke for years, from back when SMBC really was very much in XKCD's shadow in terms of fandom. It's still funny.

Studies show that all great artists (in the broad sense of the word) suffer from massive inferiority complexes. They get that good by trying to keep up with whatever the current moderately popular artist was. It's kinda like Bulimia, but with art. And good for you.
