Sorry, but this comment isn't funny. It's kind of a downer.
I've been interviewing people for programming positions and noticing, that recent CS grads are unable to clearly articulate how to detect a cycle in their data. These are young people with 3.6+ GPAs and multiple impressive sounding internships and projects. I once posted about this to Hacker News. Some guy said he might be able to figure it out in a couple of days. After the 2nd algorithms class, my classmates could tell you in 10 seconds, and not because they remembered a bit of trivia. They could tell you because they had a generalized toolkit and had been trained to use it. Apparently, that's not being taught nowadays.
