I think this actually makes the hero more heroic, not less. To create a hero is a multi generational endeavor, requiring a big contribution from many people, well actually all of society, teachers, farmers, blacksmiths etc...

But it also makes society the villain, which is starting to get all sorts of philosophical and/or Twilight Zone...
