They made 6 books and a movie for DOOM. The books were plain awful, but i guess there is not too much you can do with a plot that is basically "kill stuff and look for elevator". So I guess 3 books from Halo's plot is not too much of a stretch.
yes, but the movie was a shining beacon of cinematography and character development in a plotless blockbuster world

They ended up releasing that movie? I thought it was postponed indefinitely after Peter Jackson stopped smoking pot and realised it was a pretty stupid idea.

Pfft, everyone knows that FFVII was more overrated.

Halo wouldn't bother me so much if people didn't talk about it like it descended from heaven. It'd been done before, and better on the PC. It didn't break any ground. The controls were nothing new, the story is nothing new. The weapons are nothing new. I just don't get it.

That's how people work. There is nothing new under the sun.

You're forgetting people. At one point they were completely new.

Nah, they totally ripped so much off of primates.

But look how far the spin off has come! I'm telling you man we need to get some of that action. We need to invest in humanity*

I liked the needler weapon, whether it was new or not.

Hehe me too. A first I only had a demo version a friend lended to me, with only one level of the campaign. Playing that level over and over again, I learnt how to be incredibly effective with the pistol, mainly because I had to take down hunters and had no sniper rifle on me.

Gears of War as a series was far more overrated. Halo at least has a semblance of a plot; Gears of War has none, and has been hyped to a similar degree to Halo. (There was a Times magazine puff article about its main producer, for heaven's sake) And the plot is much more fleshed out in the books. The Halo universe has a lot of potential for creative expansion, and the storyline behind the games is fairly strong as far as games go. Plus, they're fun games.

If it were not more fleshed out, seeing as how it is a book, it would be fairly pointless.
I'm not against Halo. I had fun playing it, and my terrorist tactics certainly worked. I flew to their side, assembled all their vehicles next to one another, crashed the ship into the ground atop all of them (apparently I was able to bail before I hit the ground) then took their tank over to my side. I then destroyed all my vehicles except for the tank.
I then proceeded to snipe them. WITH A TANK. Oh yeah!
Novels were probably over rated, however.

Of course the books were overrated; in fact, they were downright bad. I only managed to finish the first one, and gave up past there. But I had to defend the games, as they're fun and a deal better than most others of the genre.

The last FPS that I really got into was Black. Probably because I don't play a lot of multiplayer, and also I like its somewhat whimsical attitude toward blowing shit up. Other than that, I can't think of anything that I've been a solid fan of other than Doom and Quake (and not the newest ones, which I haven't played). Halo's fun but I will say that it is overrated. People like it far more than they should.
