Edminster wrote:Right now I'm reading Freehold by Michael Z. Williamson, and I must say that it has a strikingly similar tone to Heinlein novels. I also crushed through Feed by M.T. Anderson in literally a couple of hours, so I would say it's pretty good. After I finish Freehold I'm reading The Moon is a Harsh Mistress for the umpteenth time, so I guess I'm kind of on a 'Liberty through Hardship' kick.
Freehold was a good read, got a bit weird at the end, but still good.

Currently re-reading the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. Highly recommend them.

Also John Ringo, who's books usually are borderline porn, wrote a really kickass sci-fi series with David Weber.. cant remember the name of the series even though i have the e-books saved on my drive. Too lazy to look..

I'm currently partway through Out of the Silent Planet, the first of the scifi series by CS Lewis. Really, really good so far. Great, engaging writing, and an interesting plot.

"I have no mouth and I must scream"

It takes maybe an hour to read, tops, and it's terrifying.

Really? I wasn't that impressed by it.
All I took away from it was "man, that computer's a jerk."
Police said they spent some time working out if they could charge the man with being armed with a weapon, as technically he was armed with part of a fish.

I've been meaning to pick that one up. I've also been meaning to finally read the novel version of 'Flowers for Algernon'.

Dear Athe, that is one depressing story.

I was gonna mention these books.... possibly the only of C.S. Lewis' works that I've enjoyed. The second one, Perelandra, is my favorite of the trilogy.

I don't really sit down and read, but I read a chapter or two before bed. So I'm only about half-way through the first one. And I'm still really enjoying it.

Finished Freehold a few days ago, didn't see where it got weird at the end. Finished Glasshouse by Stross last night, saw it was weird throughout. Starting Glory Road by Heinlein sometime today.

Aye, that's the one!

Reminded me of a blend consisting of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Starship Troopers, A little bit of Friday, and one or two others that I can't quite place. Possibly Stranger in a Strange Land for all the sex.

Thought so. You did no find that the build-up in that story was seeming to go one way, then took a turn in a completely different direction before seeming to just loose the drive and came to a rather abrupt end? Not slagging it, I really enjoyed the book, but it just seemed to loose something at the end.

Unless you're talking about the change in tone after the Halo bit, I can't see what you're talking about.

Yeah about then. It could be that I was reading 3 other books at the time, but it seemed that the story went from a neat political sci-fi to a war sci-fi, staggered drunkenly back towards political issues, tripped back over the war then collapsed, sobbing, into a sci-fi drama. But then again, I was reading other books at the time and may be mashing them together in my head.
