Audio books are for lazy people. My two cents!
Doin' podcasts before they were cool.

I will read your post later bot. I have seen far too many debate chains begin with the words "by your logic".
It's a decent alternative, but we can't really just ignore an entire form of input, can we?

And I suppose you write all your papers by hand, have never used a microwave before, and walk everywhere instead of taking some kind of motor vehicle. I also assume that when you read your book you are not in fact sitting in your bed or chair, doing nothing else, but are in fact outside doing yard work or working on homework, or preparing dinner, or even driving to school, work, or the grocery store. I also have to assume that you in fact, have some sort of evidence about the general work ethic of people who listen to audio books, and not some simply elitist statement said to try to raise yourself above others and is unsupported by any evidence, even anecdotal evidence, in every way shape and form.

What I mean to say in a less snarky way is that:
A. It's a modern invention similar to thousands of modern inventions we use every day that make our live easier.
B. Reading a book requires that the reader not be able to do anything else for the allotted time of reading while the listener to an audiobook can accomplish all sorts of tasks during such time, thus making READING the lazier of the two activities.
C. While you have every right to your opinions, no matter how much anyone may disagree with them, unsupportable attacks are not good form, nor do I truly respect them when I put effort into my posts, and while this is the internet and the internet is a hate machine, I was lead to believe this was not such a place. I am not going to change anyone here, I know that. So I expect to see several more of these things, I likely will respond in a similar manner to here if I care and in kind with the other post If i don't really.

My major malfunction is mainly all the elitism that I have heard from certain people in my life. Don't particularly care for audiobooks? Cool! Not your thing? No problem! Prefer the feel of dead trees in your hand? No argument here.If it's not for you it's not for you! I am not going to change that fact. All I can do is support my stance and try to point out where my mind doesn't follow your logic so that maybe we both can learn something. Insulting me and others for enjoying audiobooks, Not cool! I want good stories in ANY form to spread to EVERYONE who wants them. I feel it will make the world better and more enriched place. So today I shared the word about 3 AMAZING up and coming writers who I feel are creative and interesting so that a group of strangers might be able to get some free enjoyment out of them too. I did not say books were inherently bad and talked about my own personal tastes and then defended my stances. I will say this! I find NOTHING wrong with this medium and I have heard a myriad of reasons of elitism for books, which I think is VERY dangerous. I want everyone to have the joy of stories, even poor college students like myself. Free Podiobooks have been an amazing find, allowing my mind to gather many more stories while I do what I have to do as a college student with a part-time job. Reading never grabbed me, it wasn't what I turned to for fun. That doesn't mean I haven't and don't read for enjoyment, which I do on occasion. Perhaps it is a some sort of failure of my up bringing that I don't enjoy reading as much as others, but perhaps it is just who I am, or perhaps I had a more privileged life, I don't know. What I do know is, I will be dipped in hot boiling oil before I let ANYONE call me lazy or uneducated or anything else derogatory because I prefer a well produced audiobook.

I am sorry for being cliche in my arguments, perhaps it is something I have to work on. Yes it is a decent alternative. No I am not advocating that we should start discarding, or even worse, burning books en masse. My point of contention was mainly that you seemed to paint audiobooks as something that is, as you all put it here on the forums, "ruining a good thing." I feel audiobooks are just as viable as regular books for educational purposes and expanding the mind, I understand they do not engage the reading areas of the brain, but those areas are stimulated by things such as webpages, which we read daily, I did make an argument that our world may be changing and likened people to angry typists at the advent of word processor, but that was supposed to help illustrate something. No I do not think we should ignore paper books, but we should not discount the form of input known as audiobooks either.

No dude. Thursday night I went to sleep late, friday morning I woke up early, and I've been working on my paper ever since. It's saturday now, 5 am. I have to go to class at 11 to take a final and hand in the paper, so I'm not actually able to read what you said. I just read your first line and thought it sounded familiar.

I promise I'll give you more attention later, okay?

You're the one that used low grade materials for the circuitry. Those wires provide to much resistance I said. I told you that it would be harmful.

Alright, I got through your posts now that my final is over. I see you made quite a few good points. Making a long post isn't bad, and there are times when a bunch of us get long winded in certain topics. The audiobook tends to lend itself to those that dislike reading the book itself. A spoken story does exist in a league of its own, and I'm not really attacking the audio book. It's just that there are tons of kids that can hardly read, and they use this instead.

For philosophy class, we all spent 80 dollars on the power of myth by john campbell. Even though we had this book only about 200-300 pages (I'm far to lazy and tired to get the book out my bag right now) everyone still preferred to watch the movie interview that the library had. Granted, the interview came first, but we already spent the money on the book. Why not read it while it's there?

There are those that aren't all that into reading, and good for them. Then there are the under-achievers that can't read because they don't want to. They're too busy rolling dice against the walls and having butt-babies at the school prom. Anything can be abused in a similar manner, however. I'm not saying this is a particulal fault with just audiobooks, but I am saying that is such a shame that literacy is such a dying fad, which is why I PERSONALLY abstain from their use.

No kidding. Once I saw the length of response to the Bite's comment, I knew very well to skip over. A comment like that isn't close to worth the diatribe that followed.

Pfft, I don't want to read books for classes. Getting through all of my textbooks for exams was a nightmare.

In my history and english classes, I was the only one to participate outloud. No one did the reading except for just before an exam, and wondered why they failed.
I totally didn't want to read either, and it's nice to have the choice, but reading the book allows you to take that knowledge in a different way. There are different ways of learning, and some are better at listening than reading naturally, so I don't want to make a blanket statement. That would be wrong, and I don't want to implicate that. Still, it's not something that can be avoided.

Hahah I get so annoyed when people participate in class. Luckily for me, I passed all of my courses even though I didn't show up and only read for exams. It was pretty cool, 'specially because I didn't want to bother with my seminar on Greek vases, for one.

I hate people who just open their mouth in class regularly mostly because they think it'll get them a better grade. This is a big problem in Political Science, because a number of people are there because they are interested in running for politics (which I am not). They just like the sound of their voices, even if they don't know what they are talking about. My professor must've had a lot of patience or something.
I participate in class plenty, but not like that. Though I do like the sound of my own voice.
What actually frustrates me more has happened after I've graduated. I've gone to two colloquiums that my prof has spoken at (presenting parts of the book he is writing). Other professors show up, naturally. Some of them show up to show support for their colleague. Or at least that is what it looks like. Then there is intellectual posturing. Half of them don't listen, then ask questions that were already explained in the lecture. Others try to relate it (usually incredibly abstractly) to their expertise, and ask questions that make no sense at all.
Granted, some of that is because I think a lot like my prof. So I follow him quite easily. And I am in the same field as him (obviously).

No one really answers though, at least in the non honors classes. In honor classes people actually are trying to do decently in college, so I don't need to participate as much. The teachers do appreciate it. I often insert my wit as well.
Try telling your english professor you think plaigarism is a good writing tactic and get her to laugh. Go on, I dare you.
