So, how many novelists/artists who are about to get their big break are there in the state of Maine? According to Stephen King, lots.

I dunno, I'm reading (read as slogging through) Lisey's Story now and I just got through Cell for a second time. Apparently Maine is just chalk full of artistic talent and we don't know it.

Also, don't read Lisey's Story, it takes about 250ish pages for anything to really...happen.

I don't see what you're getting at, Cirtur.

Roughly one out of every five books that he has written is about a writer in Maine.

I now know far more than I ever wanted to about Stephen King's bibliography.

His personal life is pretty horrific, to be sure.

I read some of the stuff he wrote under his pen name, Richard Bachman (Rage, The Long Walk) as well as some of his more well-known works (Cell, Firestarter.) I've also seen the movies "Carrie" and "Thinner," and I must say, he's one of my favorite authors in terms of stories that are just good and engaging.

The story is worth it..

A word to the wizard, though... if you don't enjoy Lisey's Story, don't read Duma Key - very much a similar relationship as Regulators and Desperation....

My biggest problem is the 250 pages of exposition. While it may be argued that it's all necessary, a lot of it really isn't.

Oh, and Snarky can suck a gigantic nut for being a bitch.

It's what bitches do.

The Stand is one of my favorite novels ever, even at 1300+ pages for the unabridged version. It's definitely one of the best post-apocalyptic stories of all time and it was written before that became a popular topic. Highly recommended.

What other horror writers have had a tragic personal life?

We don't talk about R.L. Stein. It's too hard to imagine that kind of horror.

On a related note, I remember reading his books when I was real young, and imagining him to be the biggest badass alive. Then I saw a picture of him, and realized that he was just a regular guy.

My childhood died that day.

Your childhood needed to die. Mine died when they told me they put horse hooves in chewy lollies.

Also great link LR. He is a truly tormented genius.
