Hmmm even with the exchange rate that's more than a ten dollar difference. Stupid Australian bookshops!

EDIT: WOWWW the Australian dollar IS really good at the moment (1 AUD = 0.914500 USD). I think it's time to get my online ordering on again.

It definitely costs way too much to buy books around here, but I can't help myself!

I can't even read!

If she's paying more than $20 for a paperback she's being ripped off. Stop shopping at Harrods dear!

We have all sorts of import tax, shipping fees etc for our books. Remember they travel half way across the world to get to us.

Canadian paperbacks can go for $20+ sometimes at Indigo and Chapters. It's a real rip-off. Most of the ones I buy are about $15 each. The membership isn't terrible... $25 for 10% off and various other deals, plus $25 worth of coupons ($10 of which was actually useful to me). So I probably spent close to or over $150 since I got it. It ain't much of a deal, though. Though I did manage to get a hardcover of a new book for about $10 which was pretty awesome, and major props for the clerk telling me about it because I was getting a book by the same author.

I've been really disappointed with how short-lived the whole "pay less for books because the Canadian dollar is good" campaign lasted.
For a while there Chapters had a 20% (or something) off sale, and Walmart was selling books at the American prices.
I'm fairly certain none of that is still happenening.
Granted the dollar isn't as good as then, but still, it is a damned shame.

Almost 95 cents. I really don't know what I'm paying for here.

I knew it was getting better again, but I didn't know it was that close to parity again.

I hate the exchange thing, though. I mean, there is no reason that Amazon.ca should have the entire series boxset of MASH (the Martinis and Medicine collection) listed at over $50 more than the .com equivalent. I don't know how much extra the customs and shipping and all would cost, but I have a feeling it would still be cheaper to buy from .com.

I think when the Canadian dollar hit a dollar ten American I stopped buying books in Canadia (exceptions being local books stores, who surprisingly actually marked down their books better than Chapters/Coles, etc...). Either I'd buy online or we'd drive down to North Dakota (which is only an hour's drive from where I live) and make a day of it.

That is one thing. Our customs are a fucking bitch. You pay out the nose if you buy across the border.

The book I mentioned buying for 7 dollars (including shipping) came from England, and even went through customs (it had the stamp/label/whatever on the package), and it didn't cost me extra. It was around three dollars for the book and four dollars for shipping. Figure THAT one out.

Books are real cheap in England. One time I came home from the shops and someone had put a book in my back-pocket.

Yeah, but had the book gone through customs seemingly for free?

Also: Was it about Krishna?
Police said they spent some time working out if they could charge the man with being armed with a weapon, as technically he was armed with part of a fish.

No, it was about some guy called Xenu and how he was a dick ages ago.

Pretty intriguing read. Strangest sci-fi book I've ever read.

The church donated a ton of books like that at the library, but we refused to put them on the shelves so my mother ended up taking them all home. I think she ended up donating them to a store or something 'cause she didn't like having them around the house.
