I call bullshit on him. I bought a four part series of books of Amazon once. Four books, a single series. I managed to get four books each from a completely different edition - size, cover art, text. Everything was different. So what happened? I had to pay to send it back, wow, joy thanks a lot Amazon.

I've never had issues with Amazon.

I mean, I once imported a book from England and in total it only cost me $7 (including shipping) even though it had to go through customs! So yeah, I love amazon.

I generally borrow not buy books because I would send myself broke if I bought everything I read.
But my friend uses the Book Depository and says it's awesome, with free shipping anywhere.

I never borrow books. Never. I like to own books, and I haven't been to the library in probably more than 5 years.

I like to borrow non-fiction books if it's something I sort of interested in, but not invested in. If it's on Canadian History, I'll usually want my own copy because guaranteed, I'll want to reference it again.

Also a lot of people I know will just pass around a book they like, so I read some books that way too and just pass it on when I'm done with it. But otherwise I usually own the books I read.

I just don't see the point of spending $30-40 on something I'm only going to be reading for a few days, or weeks if it's really long. I do sometimes like buying second hand books though, if something catches my eye.

Is the Australian dollar worthless or something? A paperback costs around 6-14 dollars depending on how thick it is.

I imagine it's the same thing as in Canadia. Even when our dollars high, the Canadian price is still always a few dollars more than the American one.

I have a really hard time finding French books, so often, if there's one I have to read, I end up buying it online because it's the only way I'm going to get it. I also like to ask for certain books for birthdays and Christmas which is actually how I come to own most of my books because, like Apocalyptus said, they're too expensive to buy all the time.

I've also started reading older books online if I can find them on Gutenberg.

I definitely have a ton of trouble finding foreign language books, even in my city. Indigo carries some bilingual poetry and that's about what I know how to find. Right now I have English-Spanish collections of Neruda and Borges. I also saw a collection by Goethe that I'll probably pick up eventually. Like MM, I hate borrowing books, even though I work in a library, but there are a lot of things you can find that aren't readily for sale around here.

Well apparently the AUD is going really well at the moment, but perhaps our booksellers just enjoy jacking up the price for books.

Dear sweet Athe, what a rip-off!

Dare to compare:
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Ga ... ring+Storm
http://www.angusrobertson.com.au/book/g ... m/7624610/

Even without the member discount (which currently everyone gets as a limited offer), the Australian books cost almost double! I checked, and one American dollar is only worth $1.07 AUD. What a complete rip-off!

I was going by the non-member Internet price.

Also of course you're going to get raped at a brick-and-mortar new book store.
