BUT some people think plants are. Just as some think animals are not. So... Fruitism (or whatever it's called) is the right choice.

Yes. Eating children is always acceptable.

When you think about it all, it's just a modest proposal that is worth taking a look at.

After all, a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled, and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout.

Vegetarians make their choice based on sentience, or the capacity that animals have to 'experience' pain. Plants, on the other hand, are not sentient.
So where does sentience end? I assume you believe dogs are sentient based upon your definition. Are crabs or insects sentient? I'm pretty sure fish feel pain, although I've heard the claim that they do not. I've heard the same for dogs, and now I'm hearing it for plants. What makes you think we won't learn something about plant biology that suggests that plants do experience sensations?

Fruitarianism isn't good enough. Here's the only ethical choice for those that aren't OK with hurting sentient beings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inedia

That is almost angering me. That is so stupid. Ever so much worst than vegan.
Because by that logic, they should be able to eat eggs and milk (provided the animal is cared for in whatever way they deem fair). And ultimately they should be able to eat anything that's already dead (you know, provided its fresh).

Some people and religions take it to the extreme and will only eat the fruit that has fallen from the trees. They consider picking the fruit wrong.

I believe even stupid organisms feel both pain and anguish. Fortunately I'm not a fucking bleeding heart, so I don't care.

When is a vegetable considered dead? When it's rotting? When the plant has withered away? We can always check the pulse of any animal with blood, but how you would you know with a plant until it's well and truly past its prime?

Plants don't bury their friends, they don't even offer words of comfort as they photosynthesise their last molecule of glucose. They just leave them to die. That's why I have no remorse when vegetables appear in the shopping basket, because those cold bastards deserve their death.
