For Your Enjoyment.

Post by Kidd »

Tonight, at 8 o'clock, I arrived home with my new copy of Batman: The Dark Knight 2 disc DVD

What I was not aware of was that it was actually one disc, and the right to download a digital copy of the other, involving a DRM mechanism. I have been against DRM forever, because it stops more non-pirates than actual pirates.

It is now 10 till 11. I just finished the installation. I ran into every problem. I was forced to update everything (everything I didn't want), denied access, and for two hours, told I didn't have authorization to download. I finally started fucking around and fixed it. But, for your enjoyment, my feedback I sent to Warner Bros Digital Rights Media Department. I'm waiting on their response now.

This was my first experience with Digital Copy Protection. I have never personally experienced this, but I assume this is what it would be like to fuck a vagina made of thorns. Every nook and cranny of this flawed, gaping, warm hole of hell was wrought with bleeding pain in my lungs from screaming "Fuck you Warner Brothers. Bugs Bunny is the only good thing you have, and he's totally gay." After fucking around with Digital Rights, I was forced to upgrade to Windows Media Player 11. For this, I say, Thanks a lot, assholes. WMP11 blows cocks. It's got the usability of an autistic quarterback in a west coast offense. In fact, I would compare WMP11 to Matt Hasslebeck, in terms of suckitude. After restarting computer for the umpteenth time (and I say umpteenth because I stopped counting after bashing my fists against my computer keyboard and my cat and it stopped breathing, so now not only is my dvd broken, but so is my cat's spine ;_; ) and it still wouldn't work. I entered my authorization code only to realize this was some cruel joke you asshats have set up. Apparently, whatever I thought authorization meant, I was wrong. Either that, or it's opposite day and you guys haven't let me know this yet. Regardless, I eventually gave up and am using my copy of the Dark Knight as a coaster my numerous glasses of alcohol I shall be consuming after this very, very flawed attempt at enjoyment. If you are still reading this and haven't figured it out yet, I'm less than a happy panda. In fact, I would venture a guess that I am a sad panda, maybe even slightly angry. I may never see Heath Ledger's final big screen performance and I hope your conscience has enough room to deal with that. Knowing Heath as well as I did, he must have looked into the future, realized you guys were going to be such cockweasels with digital rights protection, and OD'ed to avoid reading the numerous blogs about how much you guys suck. In fact, I don't remember if he did or not, but if he has won the Oscar for this performance, I'm pretty sure he would dedicate it to all the pirates out there who have found a way past your clusterfucked defense and have enjoyed his stellar performance. In short, I hate you guys with a burning passion. Burning to the depths of my soul and it shall not be put out. I will never purchase from your company again. I hope you have a splendid day, because I sure as hell haven't. Signed, go fuck yourself.

Who doesn't love an angry rant filled with expletives?

This is great. I like how you worked in hasselsuck and sad panda (presumably from south park, unless you haven't seen that episode).

And NOW you know why http://thepiratebay.org is your best friend.

Awww. I'm sad to know that no person at Warners will ever read that. You'll get an automated response of something like "We thank you for your feedback. please continue to enjoy our products."

Don't be blind, man.

What user agreement policy? I mean, come on, take a step into my world, avoid the dancing rabbits, and look at the reality of the situation!

I bought the movie. I paid $25 bucks of my own money, two and a half hours of labor, for the right to be entertained! And what did I get? Two hours of frustration (and then the kick assiest movie I've ever watched). This is where people are being sheep. Sheeple.

You guys think that since they make this shit, they can tell us what to do with it. They can't, man. When you buy a movie, or a game, or a CD, you enter into only one agreement. That is between you (your morality, to be specific) and the United States Government (change country depending on location). That agreement is that you won't share this shit; that you won't upload it to bittorrent, and that you won't make copies. And let me tell you something; I stand here today (maybe) the last person to NEVER use a torrenting site and never download music(except music that is no longer owned; I know most of the classical or tune music I download is public domain, therefore legal). I buy all my shit, man. That's because if I like it, I want to hear more of it; I want to play more of it; I want to see more of it. And I'm funding that by buying. Its when these fuckers, these despicable little agencies start adding these DRM's to things that they tick off the few people who are legal and clean on this whole situation. You know what my first thought was when I got the movie finally unlocked? "How quick will it take me to get this on bittorrent, piratebay, bitcomet, and every other bit or bay on the internet. Because I want Warner Brothers to suffer. I want them to realize if they are going to treat me like a criminal by assuming I'm gonna do it, then fuck it, I'm gonna live up to their pathetic expectations of me. I mean, to completely rip off the movie I just watched, I'm Harvey Dent. They're the Joker. They're gonna keep forcing this shit onto the straight and narrow, legal citizen until I can no longer take it and I give in. Do you know how many times I've thought "Man, I can't afford this movie. I should just download it." EVERY TIME. And you know how often I do? Zero. I can say that with full confidence. As I type this random, jumbled thought process out, I've got Counter Strike: Source and Complete downloading. I bought them. Legally. Even though Steam is, well, a steaming pile of shit to get anywhere on, I do it legally. And I'm proud to say it. But I'm starting to wonder if it even makes a difference, because I'm still gonna get treated like I'm about to download it.

And you know what, since I'm on the rant, I'm gonna continue.

Spore. The game. I thought about buying it. Then I heard about it's DRM only giving you 5 downloads. I wipe my hard drive often. And if it's truly as long as the game claims to be, I may still be playing it when I wipe this thing 5 times. And then what? I HAVE TO BUY ANOTHER LICENSE? License for what? The ability to use the product I bought? Let me ask you this; when you buy the materials to make a cake and you get home and you go to make the cake, do you have to pay for the approval to make that cake? No, because that'd be fucking crazy. And yet, we have to get approval to play a game?

CD's. I've got a Blink 182 CD. I believe it is Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. I remember when that came out, they industry was clamoring about this new technology they had developed to prevent piracy. The AutoRun. It played a video and then the song. And you couldn't save the music to your hard drive because of that. The CD cost a little more because of the technology costs. You know what defeated that technology? THE FUCKING CONTROL BUTTON! Put in a disc, hold down Control. It disables AutoRun. Then right click on the disc while its in My Computer, Open, boom, all the tracks. And I had to pay more for this?

End-User License Agreements. These things piss me off to no end.
Every product you download, before installing, you get a huge block of text and a yes or no option. Click yes and you can install. Click no and you get kicked the fuck out. Why should I agree to the product before I get to use the product? Why should I say I agree not to do this, this, this, this, and this without getting some kind of incentive? Something, I mean, that's like going to a restaurant, signing an agreement that, no matter how shitty the food or how much it costs, you're gonna order and you're gonna pay.

This whole Dark Knight thing has really pissed me off. I buy movies pretty much bi-weekly, and I think I'm done with that. I mean, one of the first responses to this story was "piratebay.org". Well, what's stopping me now? If I'm gonna get degraded by a company that I paid to use the services of, then I'm gonna give them a reason to degrade me. The only time I agree to pay to get treated like shit is every Saturday night when I pick up my dominatrix hooker, and last time I checked, Warner Brothers isn't a 300lb Laotian woman named Ping.

Blink182 became the voice of my generation and my life. You see, I was but a wee little lad when they formed in 1993, and when they grew popular, I happened to be experiencing several of the things they so passionately sang about. I grew an attachment to them. And, as I grew and they did as well, they continued to sing about things I was going through, and they continued to speak in a medium I had not mastered. And when they broke up, I swore of my allegiance to the good in this world and assumed everyone was out to break my heart.

It was a joke. Kidd seems to be allied with Two-Terror.

MY school had restriction programs on their computers, like any place that has minors accessing the internet. Our system had a complaint feature, that allowed us to write directly to the ones that were responsible for deciding what we could and could not view.
Porn. Easy enough to get to. But some kids just really wanna see boobs, so they didn't use proxies or anything. They just google searched it.
So then google image search was blocked. You could view pornographic photos but not follow the links, so they closed it all off.

A group project and our particular restraints prevented us from working on the assignment anywhere else but at the school. It was a biology thing, where we showed the evils of smoking via organ damage. We NEEDED images as part of the assignment. Being locked out was a great difficulty.

So, with charm and eloquence on my side, I composed a series letter via the complaint system, stating that the sole reason for internet access and other computer related activities was to accomplish school work. I complained that our assignment needed to be on the creative side, and that we needed pictures for our presentation. We were prevented not from just viewing inappropriate material, but any images at all! Despite being purely anecdotal, the reasoning was sound. The very next day, google images was unblocked. I learned this when I walked into class and my friend showed me he could access porn again. YEAY!

So they block it two days later again. I send an email to them again, stating I had written to them before, and kindly thanking them for seeing my side of things. I apologized to them, stating how I saw how their decision to unblock the images had backfired. I offered a system of blocking the sites based on tags associated with the site, as well as proxy settings. This would be complicated, but benefitial without impeding our ability to do work at all.

AND AGAIN, IT WORKED!

I had to brag about this, much like I am now. I had told my partner in the project how I seemingly was able to persuade them. He asked how I was able to message them. I showed him the complaint system whenever some site had been filtered. He took it upon himself to start sending random profanities in a constant stream of emails. The complaint system was removed the next day. For years, the filtering has become terrible due to a lack of input. News sites were blocked, for pete's sake. We couldn't do anything in history class!

All i'm saying is that if I showed up on your doorstep, threw a bag of shit down on the ground in front of you and began to urinate on it, while having a mariachi quartet sing about how your law needs to be trimmed, I don't think you'd really want to do it.
(mabey you would. I don't make judgements)

Ahmet, I'm not really sure if you saw my point of the rant, or if you had that story bottled up, waiting for the first chance to use it, but either way, it has little to no bearing in this discussion.

School proxies and surf control are fine by me. In fact, I'm in favor of them. Mainly because, before our school got it's surf control up, I saw twogirlsonecup because my friend is an ass. Not to mention, you don't pay the internet bills or the electricity bills or the software bills. The school does. If they want to tell you what to do on their equipment, then it is their right.

My problem is being told what I can do with things I legally purchase for my personal computer.

And work on your analogies, please. Here's an example;

If I came to your house and sold you a cookie (its the best cookie in the fucking world), but after you bought it, I told you it's not a cookie that can be eaten, only one that can be placed on a shelf and admired from a distance, you'd feel cheated and pissed off. You'd say "Hey, you have no right to tell me what to do with MY cookie, in MY house, on MY time".
I Believe In Harvey Dent.
