Burgers nothin'!
I'm gonna get me a riding bison!

Police said they spent some time working out if they could charge the man with being armed with a weapon, as technically he was armed with part of a fish.

Re: The Fate of Newspapers
Yeah you can get bison burgers up here. I'm a vegetarian so I've never tried them personally, but my mom loves them. Best endangered species she's ever eaten, she says.
There's an old MTS commercial (Manitoban telephone company) that has a girl riding a bison in it, and I searched for it for about 20 minutes before deciding it's probably not on the Internet. But know that such a commercial exists and that I really wanted to show it to you.
[edit- don't you love finding four day old mistakes?]

1) I'm a vegetarian, too! Can we sit together and feel morally superior about our lifestyle choices and look at all those omnivores with disdain.smiley_cow wrote:Yeah you can get bison burgers up here. 2) You aren't a Mennonite, are you? (Random question, I know.)
Edit: Ahh! Mod edits drive me crazy! Disdain is defined as "to look upon with contempt." It's a real word.

Course, what else is there for vegetarians to do when we get together? Silly omnivores and their meat.astasia wrote: 1) I'm a vegetarian, too! Can we sit together and feel morally superior about our lifestyle choices and look at all those omnivores with disdain/distaste?
Nope. I know lots of Mennonites though, and even a few Hudderites. They're everywhere, and they speak German which is cool. Why do yo ask?2) You aren't a Mennonite, are you? (Random question, I know.)
Not sure if this is directed at me or not, but I know if I ever used distain I probably meant disdain. I don't think I've ever seen/heard the word distain before.(Is "distain" a made-up word you use? Tell me now or I'll probably keep changing it.)

Re: The Fate of Newspapers
I asked because my gf grew up in Manitoba, and her family is Mennonite. And, now that I've met a few other people from Manitoba, all of them have had Mennonite origins, so, I started to wonder if any non-Mennonites really populated the area.smiley_cow wrote:Course, what else is there for vegetarians to do when we get together? Disdain is a real word. The other part was added by a mod who was curious about its accuracy, but it's Merriam Webster certified.

Ah. Yeah, they're everywhere. They're like locusts. Actually when you get outside the colonies there are very few Mennonites hanging around, though often you'll see them coming in to the city to do some shopping or go to the local fair. Even people who are just descended from Mennonites are few and far between, every once in a while you run into them, but actually I think they fall somewhere around fourth or fifth for largest minorities. First would be Aboriginals, second - Chinese people, third - Latin Americans. There may or may not be more Mennonites here than Koreans.astasia wrote: I asked because my gf grew up in Manitoba, and her family is Mennonite. My family is actually part Pennsylvania Deutsch, so, I have nothing to speak of.
I didn't realize, however, that Manitoba had so many immigrants. Toronto, of course, was incredibly diverse, but, I got the impression from people who lived there that the midwestern provinces tended to be more homogenous.

Re: The Fate of Newspapers
Hey, neat! I am also a vegetarian!
And I think there are at least a couple more around here, too. Ahmet, maybe? Asherian?
Too bad about the commercial. I'd've liked to have seen it.
(I also used to kind of look like a Mennonite.)

Yeah, that's what I figured when Astasia pointed out it was a mod who'd typed that in. Then I felt embarrassed for not noticing it sooner, so I decided to just keep my mouth shut before I said something else stupid.mountainmage wrote: Astasia spelled it d-i-s-t-a-i-n. Actually most of Manitoba and I think Saskatchewan too is pretty homogenous, mostly Icelandic or Ukrainian origin (I myself am about 1/8 Swedish ) but Brandon is a freak city. We've gotten about three or four thousand immigrants from China, Mexico and India over the last 4 years and it`s changed how we look demographically quite a bit. Not to say we were completely white before that, one of my best friends growing up was Ethiopian and our Spanish/French teacher at my high school was Haitian, just that now visible minorities take up a much larger percentage of our population than before.astasia wrote: Hmm. I'm pretty sure Ahmet is not a vegetarian. He just doesn't eat animals that his religion says he can't. He mentioned pigs. I don't remember if Ashe is, though.

Re: The Fate of Newspapers
Being a very, very bad freelance journalist I'll put my two cents in, even if my talk is cheap.
Newspapers and magazines will always have a niche market. Always. People still like to read articles for in depth-information about a particular subject that you don't get on the 6 o'clock news, and people just don't want to read a computer screen for a long time. It leads to eye strain and the overwhelming feeling that you could be going outside.
That being said, broadcast/online media are going to be the big winners in the next ten years or so. Newspapers and magazines will shrink and online video content is going to be the big mover. A heck of a lot of people are moving away from TV boradcast which are interpollated to audiences and chooing online video content because simply put, they can choose the content which they wish to see. If they don't want to watch a story about a chimp being born in a zoo, they don't have to. I know theoretically people can turn off the TV, but they don't, it's the same principle behind the 'I'm outraged by this show but I won't stop watching it'-syndrome.
The broadcast media and online to a lesser extent will be the media of choice for headlines. This is the first place you're going to get your headlines in the morning. I know I have my alarm tuned to the morning news, and then I wake up, take a shower and check the news sites for further headlines. This shift, will inevitably change the way print media is seen.
Because it's not an instant medium, you're going to see less and less headlines in newspapers and more and more opinion. You're going to see debate and feature articles in print publication because printing headlines will kind of be a waste of space. People are just going to see "Well, I already know that, and I knew it this morning" if print continues to print typical news stories, and consumers will just see it as a dead medium.
So I believe that newspapers and magazines won't die, but they'll shift the content of their publications toward more in-depth stuff which a news-hungry consumer base will appreciate. This will mean less profit for the print sector but it's the only way they're going to stay relevant to today's world.

Um...I kind of require newspapers to exist for my income. So I'd quite like it if you could all buy more.
Vegetarians though. Who decides whether you're allowed to put the "suitable for vegetarians" logo on food?
