Giant Traffic Barrel Monster: Herald of the New Apocalypse?

Post by Edminster »

Okay, probably not.

Especially since the creator was arrested before he had a chance to create even more. Do you think he deserved to be arrested, rather than simply fined? Does the fact that the artist was arrested make this piece of Art more powerful and/or interesting?

If he got caught then he deserved to get caught. Dude needs to get some tips from banksy and disappear into the night after placing an installation like that.

Pretty ridiculous. It's strange that someone could make a big deal of this, anywhere.

It's still not as funny as this. David Černý is a pretty lulzy sculptor.

I'm lost as to why this is an offense against society sufficiently heinous to be worthy of arresting for. Granted, it's not a good idea to let people steal/cut/rearrange traffic barrels anytime they desire. However, I don't see that it's hurting anybody, except maybe the workers who have to take it down, and of course the municipality which will have to pay for new barrels. If I were in charge of his punishment, I'd make him pay to replace the barrels and to cover the wages for the workers who will take it down. He didn't do anything remotely damaging enough to make it reasonable to send him to jail.

It is arrest-worthy because it is destruction of property. If he had just drawn on them, it probably would've resulted in a slap on the wrist (depending on the cop), but because he actually destroyed a couple of them, punishment was probably necessary.

I agree that it should be punishable beyond just the cost of the barrels - we can't have people thinking they can cut up public property whenever they feel like expressing themselves. But I don't think this guy is enough of a danger to society that he needs to be detained, and he's probably not that much of a flight risk. If they'd caught him at the scene, then sure, an arrest would be appropriate. But pulling him out of his house seems a bit much.
Police said they spent some time working out if they could charge the man with being armed with a weapon, as technically he was armed with part of a fish.

I think the arrest is meant as more of a deterrent.

If this guy just bought his own crap, than I think he should just get a slap on the wrist. But stealing that much is theft, it's worth more than 100 so it's not just petty.

$360... But the thing to note is that the goal is not theft. The appropriate term would be vandalism, I think. Still, it's a little unreasonable that this guy's a criminal and Banksy is an artist. I'm always crossed between how people shouldn't be going around damaging other people's property without permission, and how the fact that it bothers anyone is a little strange to me.

Not sure who Banksy is. I have already expressed my disdain with vandalism. I do not care if you are expressing yourself, express yourself on your own fricken stuff. If you decide to make art out of a tree on my lawn, I will fricken cut that tree down just to spite you. If you decide to paint something on my house, I will paint over it right away. Screw you up the butt because I don't want you taking my shit. Same thing with the government.

Banksy is an artist from Bristol*. He is a graffiti artist whom everyone who likes pop art faps over. He has a pseudo-political message that is sort of like a teenage anarchist's notebook.

Hanging dude was okay I guess. I had to be there.
And screw them dudes. I've got bigger issues to press than a government who doesn't send the taxes where I want them to go.

Pretty sure Banksy is both. If he came to your house and drew all over your things - or if Mr. Carnevale came over and cut up all of your books to make a statue - it would still be art, but I'm damned sure you'd call the police.
