University of Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari and his undefeated team raised more than $1 million in about five hours Sunday afternoon at a "Hoops for Haiti" telethon.
"I've been saying for months that the Big Blue Nation is full of 'crazies,'" Calipari said. "But after Sunday's outpouring of support, I can call everyone something else: compassionate and generous. ... It was beyond my wildest dreams."
Calipari emceed the show on WKYT-TV while players manned the phones. The coach said he has been telling the young men, whose team is 18-0, to be humble when things are going good.
Calipari pulled together the telethon in less than two days, reaching out to several leaders and agencies for help.
Red Cross officials said Sunday they knew of no other coach or athletic team hosting a telethon.
"Our response to this tragedy will make a difference," said Terry Burkhart, CEO of the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Fans, other coaches, celebrities and business figures called in to pledge $525,000. A group called Cal's Pals for Haiti — led by Lexington businessman Royce Pulliam and including Calipari — will provide an additional $500,000. An eBay auction will continue through Tuesday, so an official total won't come until later.
By Sunday night, the bid for dinner for six at Calipari's Richmond Road home with UK über fan Ashley Judd stood at $11,600. The leading bid for two-on-two hoops with former UK players Scott Padgett and Tony Delk was $1,825.
The phone lines were jammed all afternoon, and Calipari called on many famous friends.
Gov. Steve Beshear appeared on the telethon, bringing $1,000 from the personal donations of his office staff. Former UK coach Tubby Smith and sports commentator Dick Vitale each called and donated $1,000 during on-air interviews.
University of Texas basketball coach Rick Barnes and Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis also called. They talked to Calipari on the air and made donations.
Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim pledged $5,000. Former UK player Nazr Mohammed gave $10,000 to bring the total from callers' pledges to more than $500,000.
Alliance Coal CEO Joe Craft, a driving force behind UKs state-of-the-art practice facility, donated $100,000.
Calipari and his wife, Ellen, gave $25,000.
In a videotaped message, Judd explained to viewers that even small donations would provide safe drinking water for families in Haiti.
She will be providing her personal chef for the Calipari dinner.
Patrick Patterson said an older man who donated $200 began crying on the phone, calling Patterson "a great ambassador" for UK basketball.
He also said a female caller was in shock that he'd answered the phone. "She couldn't talk," he said.
Eric Bledsoe said he answered phones non-stop for 90 minutes. As the donations mounted Sunday, he gained a new appreciation for fans. "I was thankful," Bledsoe said.
In an interview with the Herald-Leader, Calipari said he decided to pursue the telethon idea after Pulliam, CEO of the Lexington-based Urban Active health clubs, called him Friday morning and said he had cried after seeing the victims in Haiti, and wondered what they could do to help.
Calipari said he in turn called Wayne Martin, general manager at WKYT, who also had been approached by United Way of the Bluegrass and the Red Cross.
The Red Cross is immediately sending all the proceeds to Haiti. "It's going to where it's supposed to go," Calipari told viewers.
As the telethon wound down, Calipari told viewers: "The blue dust is everywhere across the nation."

It has come full circle.Kentucky is on top of The Associated Press' college basketball poll, and the Wildcats are a unanimous No. 1.
The only unbeaten team in Division I, Kentucky (19-0) received all the first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel Monday, its first time at No. 1 since the final poll of 2002-03.
The Wildcats, No. 2 Kansas, Villanova, Syracuse and Michigan State all moved up one place from last week as Texas, which was No. 1 for two weeks, dropped to sixth after losing to Kansas State and Connecticut.
Georgetown, Duke, West Virginia and Purdue rounded out the top 10.
North Carolina (12-7), the defending national champion and loser of three straight, did not receive a vote and dropped out of the poll for the first time since January 2006.
