I didn't want to start a new thread but...

Are all women really insecure? Or is it just the ones who I become good friends with?

Seriously.

Have had a week long discussion with Girl#1 about a relationship she is in. Incredibly emotionally abusive. Of course it is in such a way that I'm fairly certain he's cheating. But I don't want to guess at that, and upset her. Turns out she's the mistress. Then more conversation, and suddenly nothing. Why? I'm sure it is because she is back with him and she feels guilty about the two of us conversing. (Interestingly, it is the same avoidance that he was doing to her from time to time).
Girl #2 is in and out of a string of relationships that most closely resemble "booty calls" and it makes her miserable.
Girl#3 was a great friend until she latched onto an overly secure female friend (who by the way, is probably the most insecure of the bunch, but overcompensates) and completely changed who she was.

Seriously.

Rant over!

Actually a lot of women* do have a really low self-esteem. It comes from being bombarded by a media that overvalues superficial things like looks, and completely undervalues anything of any actual consequence. Of course it doesn't help that a famous woman has a choice of either being someone you can respect or a sex-symbol, but never both. And we live in a society where it's perfectly acceptable for a male mechanics to insist on talking to a woman's husband before telling her what's wrong with her car, but heaven forbid Amanda Palmer not shaver her armpits?

Of course it's a lot more than that, mainstream media I think is the absolute worse, but even in this day and age, I still see sexist attitudes everywhere. Just yesterday my mother asked one of my cousins if he's ever seen the Princess Bride, and he sneered and answered, "No, why would I ever see something with a name like that?" I could have smacked him. This is why girls have such a low self esteem.

Of course entire rants about problems with girls really don't help things along either.

*When you use the term boy for a man you're emphasizing that he's young or naive. Sorry, it's just a pet-peeve of mine.

I understand your girl/woman dichotomy. It meant no disrespect. I did begin with women, but needed specific titles. Really I just find that "woman" often sounds awkward and impersonal. And "friend" can be ambiguous when referring to the opposite sex, which I also would've considered using. Actually, upon reflection, "female" would've been the optimal word to use.

This is basically what goes through my head whenever I'm talking about girls/women/ladies/females, and I usually end up settling with "female". I mean what can they say is wrong about that? Well plenty, but hopefully my ruse will distract everyone long enough.

Yeah, I think for a lot of people, it just sounds more casual to them to say 'girl', but honestly I think it's just because we hear the term 'girl' a lot more often than the term 'woman' whereas we hear the term 'man' a lot more often than the term 'boy'. Which is why I call it a pet peeve, and not a legitimate issue. I'm well aware that when people use it, they don't actually mean any sort of disrespect.

Certainly I wouldn't actually think any less of anyone for using the term, but it's not a bad thing to point out every once in a while.

It's kind of a PC thing, though, isn't it? I mean they're just words. Whenever I say "girl" I immediately worry that I'm going to offend someone but does that really make sense? I mean it's not like everyone's gonna think that I'm talking about a 12-year-old. I dunno. I understand your point but I'm not convinced that it really matters.

Actually, come to think of it, how did Smiley know I wasn't talking about 12 year olds?

And Lethal doesn't really mean they're friends per se.

I'm studying semantics right now but that wouldn't be the funny answer, and I don't really understand it yet anyway.

I think part of the problem is nine time out of ten, the word 'girl' for an adult woman isn't accurate. I know you'll probably argue with me over this, because you see language as always changing, but I think people should make more of an effort to be more accurate with their language.* Unless they mean to say that the person you are talking about is young, you shouldn't call them a boy or girl. And if we are to take what someone is saying looking just at the words they chose and not guess at what they probably meant, when the word 'girl' is used, it does insinuate that they are not talking about a fully able adult. Even though that's not usually what they meant to say, it is still what they said.

Well you're not Cirtur...

*This is nothing, I have a 20 minute rant on how people shouldn't use the word 'literally' as an hyperbole.
